Posts: 113 | I have a few quick questions regarding clear coating. What do you guys do or use to clean up the hook hangers and eyelets after your clear coat dries? Do you ever coat the entire lip on your crank baits? Will that make them stronger or will it just kill the action? When do you remove the tape that covers the lip to keep it clean? I manage to make a mess of my lips from finger prints or a drip from the e-tex as I am applying to other baits. I am afraid that I will not get the tape off if it dries over it. Your advice is greatly appreciated!

Posts: 248 Location: Xenia, Ohio | Keep your coats as thin as possible, It doesn’t hurt to coat the entire lip, but don’t overdo it with thick coats, try to keep the epoxy off the screw eyes the best you can makes for a cleaner looking bait, you can use a cordless drill with small drill bit to clean out the screw eyes, make sure you use a heat gun on your clear coat to pull out all the air bubbles while it on the rotisserie.

Posts: 304 Location: PA | I tape my lips for painting only, when you put your etex on add/drip extra around the lip. Let it puddle up where the lip meets the body and it will level itself out, do not leave the tape on! I use devcon 2 ton to glue the lip in first, this gives it most of the strength. You don't have to coat the whole lip, more room for error imo. Clean up screw eyes with an exacto, small pliers or drill bit as said above will peel it rite off the metal. Hope that helps good luck. Posts: 235 | I never tape my lips and do coat some of them all the way. As far as the eye screws go, like BC522 said just uee an exacto knive and its EZ to clean them up. If you use a heat gun use it sparingly or it will create more problems than its worth. I never never use any heat and have never had any problems. When I mix the etex really good I let it set for at least 5 minutes and just blow your breath across the etex and it will remove the air bubbles. For a dryer I used a small motor from an old Microwave. The trick is to make sure your baits are spaced evenly for balance. Works great and I have been using the same motor for 13 years now. No problems. Make sure it is a 110 volt as there are many different models. I have had up to 21 of my 12 inch baits on the wheel at one time. Hope this helps you out. Any questions PM or email me. Where do you live??

Posts: 113 | Thanks guys. That is what I have been doing to clean them up a bit; I just wanted to make sure I wasn’t missing something. I made a drying rack out of wood and used the motor from the Christmas deer that we put in the front yard. We have……or had the ones that moved their heads. I informed my wife that the deer craped out and we needed new ones, LOL! The motors work great for my rack! Kenslures – I hesitate to tell you this for fear of being blackballed from the site (LOL) but I live in the suburbs of Chicago. I had my 3yr old and 6yr old paint some of the TI blanks and I did a Bears one. This is a pic of them in the drying rack. Posts: 235 | Hey Muskyfreak44 I thinks thats great that you got your kids involved. I had 5 of my grandkids paint up some walleye baits last year. They just had the time of their life and really enjoyed that. The reason I asked where you live is because I was going to tell you to stop over some weekend and maybe I could help you out. Your probably about 150 miles from me as I'm about 50 miles south of Green Bay. I was always going to try one of those motors as we had those deer too but the microwave motors are still going strong after 13 years. Keep up the good work. A very rewarding hobby. I really enjoy it and if I can help someone out I enjoy that too. Ken Edited by Kenslures 3/19/2013 7:10 AM

Very nice stuff Muskyfreak, you have your answer, but I wanted to say nice job on stealing the deer motor lol and I love that Bears lure! You might be surprised how many bait builders are from the Chicagoland area – myself included.

Posts: 113 | The funny thing is that they are already fascinated and addicted to lures, both bass and musky. I don’t know if I am doing a good thing or a bad thing!! I already justify buying things for myself in the weirdest ways, now I have two simple excuses to buy more! The “boys need it” or “the boys can’t fish without that”! LOL I can already see how this is going to play out. I do love the fact that they are so into it; I can’t wait for the day I get to take them to Canada and fish with their Grandpa. I had only one trip to Canada with my Grandpa before he passed and I cherish that trip.

Posts: 235 | bobtodd, the sooner you start them the more they will appreciate it. When my grandkids come to our house they always want to paint. Some of them were only 4 years old. They have quite the imagination and its great fun.
