Going to be rigging an HDS 10 or 8 to the bow of the Ranger 618vs. I was thinking about using a big Ram Mount with a short arm. Another thought was just screwing the bracket into the floor with six screws or so. Is there anything wrong with this?

Nah re thought those plans. Pretty close tho. Came with some H Birds I sold, putting my HDS 7 from the old boat on the console and a HDS 10 on the bow. Gonna be a perfect set up Edited by Nolan 3/13/2013 6:39 PM

Do you take your unit off every time? I don't like trailering with the units still attached to the boat Edited by Nolan 3/13/2013 6:55 PM

I have a 10 mounted in the bow with the large long RAM mount and really like it, they're a bit pricey at $100 but well worth it in my opinion. I don’t remove the electronics while trailering, and actually use the RAM mount to pivot the unit facedown (with the plastic screen protector on it) over the hoop of my net and then lock it down flat on the front deck. Posts: 44 | I have my HDS 10 mounted on a Stabil Mount up front of my Ranger 1860. Works awesome, and gets it up off the floor little bit. I always trailer with the boat covered, so I haven't been removing it unless I am going a long distance.

I mounted the bracket right to the access plate in front. Did the same on the dash too. They don't move and no messing with the rams.

Posts: 1663 Location: Kodiak, AK | I have both of mine on 2.5" long RAM's. I'd suggest playing with their location, front and back. I like having my HDS8 on my console, and my 7 on the bow. I really like the larger screen for driving and navigating. Then fishing, I have my 7 on the bow solely as a chart, and the console HDS8 is turned around to face the bow and is sonar/LSS or a secondary chart on a different zoom if I need it. It's also nice to have them on the same type of mount, in the event one goes south, you can move the other one into the position yuo need it most at the time.

Posts: 670 Location: Otsego, MN | I owned a 618vs and had a LCX 111 mounted to the front on a large ram mount. I had that thing locked down solid and I personally thought it was not enough. In rough seas that thing would move around a lot and bang around. I had the same thing on a 620T and it was not bad. The 618 gets abused a bit more than the 620T. I see your in the metro and if you fish tonka a lot your going to see that graph flopping around up there as you cross the main lake on a busy day out there. I ended up mounting it straight to the floor and it was much better, you can see it just fine no need to elevate a 10 inch I think unless maybe your 7 ft tall or can't see very well.

Exactly what I was thinking Pedro. A 10inch screen is huge

Location: 31 | Nolan - 3/15/2013 12:19 PM Exactly what I was thinking Pedro. A 10inch is huge I agree that a Ram mount tends to move some when up right, even when cranked down tight… so I can understand the argument for not needing one on the bow. However, in order to get the right viewing angle at the helm these Ram mounts are almost mandatory. I roll with two 10” at the helm and definitely need the adjustment they provide to help shoehorn them onto the dash. I had a problem with them sagging in rough water and had to spin one of the slotted centerpieces of the RAM Mount around to lock one in place while the other unit kind of leans against it… after relocating one mount and some aggravation getting it dialed in they don't budge now. Regarding the bow unit, when it’s face down flat on the deck there is zero bouncing around that I've seen (I leave it that way when I'm only trolling and have watched it). However, it still has the same kind of minor sagging problem when it's left upright between spots. But I certainly wouldn't consider that flopping around, and it definitely does not bang into anything in my boat anyway. It's just a 2 second nuisance to adjust it back up after pounding waves, but is well worth it for me to be able to quickly adjust the angle of the screen depending on fishing conditions. All this talk about 10” being huge, banging and flopping………… Edited by Jerry Newman 3/15/2013 2:10 PM

Like I said; the only problem is that these Ram mounts have a tendency to sag... it was a real pain having to push the GPS back up when it was rough. I came real close to having 2 tension knobs machined to that centerpiece so that I could lock it in place, but ended up just spinning the slots around so that the longer part of the center section wedged it in place. If you insist on a ram type mount try a Cisco system mount. Guaranteed not to move. I have my gimbal hard mounted to the boat and have never had an issue with viewing angle ever, but if you want a ram the look at other stuff. There are lots of options besides dealing with the sag.

Bingo, nice job Jim... I think we have a winner! These things look awesome and are in the same price range as the Ram mount. I'm pretty sure that had I known about this before I rigged my latest boat I would have used them instead. Unfortunately, although I'm happy with the way it is now, I had to go through a lot of aggravation to eliminate the sag. This sure looks like a no-brainer and why we share information like this here.
