Posts: 1185 Location: Iowa | Hey Fellas, My buddy called me last night and told me that he has the 5th-15th of july off from work. We were thinking og going to the Metro Area to try our luck for an extended weekend and I was curious is anyone could give me some information about the best possibility of tangoing with a few Metro Muskie. I have heard great things about White Bear, Bald Eagle, Forest, and Waconia. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance... Big Perc Edited by Big Perc 6/14/2005 10:26 AM

Those will all have the crap beat out of them by then,,,I would definitly target the early mourning 4:30- 10am,,weve had a cool wet spring its rained 25 out of the last 35 days,,however water temps are now zooming,,,Minnetonka might be hitting summer peak about that time,,Im betting fishing conditions are going to be messy this year,,With all the rain rasing water levels and the hot temps when it isnt raining causing the milfoil to grow when the rain falls off and the water levels start to drop the milfoil is going to lay over and mat terrible those lakes have tremendous boating activity which means all that milfoil wil get tore up and lots of floters making topwater fishing tough,,White Bear is a beutiful lake to just be on,,Bald Eagle has a bloom and might be too warm,,People are pounding Forrest pretty hard these days,,Dont rule out the many tiger lakes not alot of people fish them

Posts: 113 Location: Shoreview, MN | I fish most of the lakes in the east metro. WB has some giants, but traditionally is VERY slow this time of year - In 5+ years of fishing in the North Metro MI league, I think there has only been one 30+" fish in the boat in mid-July. Not sure why, but I think it's probably becasue most fish suspended over deep water. This lake is very clear and I really enjoy fishing it. You have the potential to see a lot of beautiful fish follow, but getting them to open up can be challenging. Try early AM or a cloudy day. There may be some fish in the shallow weeds, but fishing deeper (at least 15-20') is usually the key. The weedline is at least 17-18'. I like fishing small cranks like baby shallow raiders in natural colors with a fairly light line (50#) to get 'em deep. But topwaters in 20-30' can also work. This lake is the most crowded with the least amount of trailer parking. On weekends it's best to be at the ramp before ~8-9 am, and on weekdays the lot can be full by ~ 5 pm. Baldy will probably have a good bloom going by then and visibility will probably be less than 1'. I don't like fishing this lake because of the water conditions but the fishing can be pretty good. It may be your best bet on a hot sunny day. Most of the weeds will have died off, but some of the points and humps will have some cabbage and coontail. Burning bucktails is usually the ticket this time of year. Opposite of WB, many fish here can be very shallow (<5'). Forest will be clouded up due to the die-off of the curly pondweed and the weed "harvesters" churning up the shallows, but visibility can bs 2-4' in many areas. There should be plenty of weed growth coontail, milfoil, and some decent cabbage in spots where the harvesters haven't hit. All the fish I seem to catch on this lake are in less than 7' in thick weeds - requiring either spinner baits, very shallow-running cranks or, Suicks, topwaters, etc. But I also know many guys do well fishing shallow-running cranks over deeper water - setting up on the break-line and casting out. Speed trolling is also pretty popular on this lake. Nice thing about all three of these lakes is that they are less than 20 minutes apart so it's easy to move from one lake to another (although it can be tough to get a parking spot on WB in the evening). There is also Rush Lake about 30 minutes north of Forest, but don't know much about it. On the other hand, if I had the time - I'd probably head for Minnetonka on the weekdays. If you've got any $$ to use, then hire a guide - they are much more in tune with which lakes are hot - and should be able to put you into fish.
