I am looking for a new rod and reel to throw lighter lures like bucktails and some spinner baits.

I currently have a G Loomis GL2 8'6" mag heavy and fast action. It is mated to a Abu Garcia Record No.60.

I would like some suggestions for an overall smaller package that would be good for throwing bucktails and lighter lures overall than compared to the GLoomis.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Crap, was talking tackle/gear tonight with a young guide from Witch Bay Camp, rod length for jerk baits was discussed and I guess it kinda stuck in my mind - greenstealth you're absolutely correct the "Long Ranger" is 8'6" (I edited my post) thanks.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I was looking for a shorter rod because I already have an 8'6", or are you suggesting that that length rod is what I should be looking for?

I have read a lot about guys using rods that are 7'6" for throwing smaller and lighter lures.

The Jerk 7'6 XH is a good rod although you will lose some throwing power when throwing very small baits, its perfect for buck tails double 10s, double 8s, regular dawgs and smaller jerk baits all this with a little stiffer rod with good back bone. Next would be the 7'3 Down Sizer MH which is meant for smaller baits, i use it to throw smaller Rapala husky jerks for pike and its perfect for that, regular dawgs and smaller buck tails like single 8 and other smaller baits. Both rods have mean hook set power. Good luck with what ever you choose.

It's about tip more than length. If you want something shorter than 8'6" than I would suggest the 8' top-n-tail or the 7'9" lipstick. Both of those rods have tips that would load up well with smaller musky lures. St croix also makes a "downsizer" rod in 7'3" size.

When you say "tip more than length", by that do you mean the action of the tip? Because the downsizer and lipstick has fast actions which many other rods with similar specs also have. I might need some more info on that.

I have a 7"6" Shimano Compre rod perfect for Bucktailes and it is paired with a Abu Record 50 with a power handle.
I'm gonna unload them so if you be able to use either of them let me know.

Thanks

The long ranger is 8'6" but it's a MH so it will feel nothing like your other rod. No need to go shorter for smaller lighter baits the rod is built for them. If for some reason you prefer shorter than get the top n tail it's my favorite rod. Otherwise the length of the long ranger will cast them baits farther and the length is nice for 8's. You can't compare rods by length you need to be looking at weights and actions. Either the top n tail or long ranger would be awesome for spinner baits, tails up to dbl 8's, some cranks, and up to reg dawgs. I'd pick one of them along with a revo toro HS.

If you have a store or can make it to a show and play with different ones to get a feel for them and see which you like. Two rods with the same length but different weight and actions will feel much different. Then different length rods of the same weight and action also feel different from each other so it's nice to check them out first.

I might be interested in the combo you're thinking about selling. What condition is it in and what's your asking price?
