I wouldn't let anything said on this thread stop me from hiring a guide again. Any issues I have had were pretty minor

Just get a guide who treats it as a profession not a paid hobby and you'll be fine.

I think you'd be crazy to never try fishing with a guide, granted I'm no pro. I learned a ton from fishing with Bob Benson and how else can you show up to new waters with limited time and know you are on fish right away. Not only that but I have an early 60s 14'er so vermillion wouldn't be so nice. I asked questions about situations that didn't come up while with him but I wasn't sure about. Just like anything you will have your bad along with your good. Do a little research first, it's not hard to get info on different waters and guides. There's always something knew to learn for all of us, if you think you already know all their is to know all the better for those of us still willing to learn. Look for a reputable guide and enjoy your trip you might take something knew away.

+1

Every guide I've ever been out with has been exceptional. I believe the horror stories you've read above are the exception rather than the rule. Odds are that if you hire a true pro, you will get one.

It appears I read the original post wrong.....poster asked if the guide could bring a buddy along...not the client....my bad......so does a guide take 2 clients or only one.....?

I've had the great fortune to fish with some very well known guides, and I've had nothing but positive experiences with both of them. They taught me a lot, and if they had action on a particular bait they had me put it on as to increas my chances.

However the first time I fished with one of them, he asked me if I wanted him to fish, and I was shocked that their are clients that wouldn't want the guide to fish.

Lastly I'm not saying their's anything wrong with reeling in a guides fish, but I couldn't do it, and still feel good about it. It wouldn't really feel like I caught it

If the guide is fishing then that means he really thinks there is fish there. If the guide is not fishing then if I don't catch nothing I would think we really weren't on any fish and the guide was taking my money while chilling.

I have been on St. Clair and the Larry where it is easier for the guide to have a first mate or rod guy. He set the baits the way the guide wants them, handles the netting, he doesn't catch any fish and you get more rods. Casting is a different story.
my 2 cents.

Pondigger- It depends on the guide but most offer up to two people so it's up to you.

What if you are sucker fishing and the guide asks to bring a friend along to allow for more lines in the water?

That's a good point, but he said, "that some people don't want the guide to fish because they think it decreases their chances of catching fish."

I've never had a guide ask to "bring a friend".. The day would be over, nobody would get paid, and I'd ask for my deposit back. As for fishing in the front of the boat? Never seen a guide do that, either. Bad move dude. That's what you call subsidizing someone elses fishing. Guides fishing? When it's just me, I welcome it. Two baits in the water = figuring out a pattern twice as fast. 3 in the boat? Well... Go ahead and fish if you want to. We're not leaving you anything to cast at, though, so don't expect much action. In that case, I figure anything the guide catches is a fish we would never have seen otherwise. 3rd bait through...

I have had guides try to "partner me up" with someone else so we could split the cost for the day, and save me a few hundred bucks. But that's only fun when it's someone you know, or someone you wind up liking. If it's someone who gets a lot of backlashes, likes to cast across your line, in front of the boat when they are in the middle, or can't cast for #*#*, I'd rather be alone in the boat.

I never did it when I guided, and would have never even thought of it. That's just plain crazy talk. I agree with what all the other guides on here said.

Although I would find it rather fun to fish in between say Paul Klein and Howie Meyer! Heck I would even gladly give up the front and middle of the boat, and fish from the back. I may not even fish at all. Too much would be missed if I was fishing.
