I'm thinking about making a few musky baits. I thought I'd try starting with slab sided minnow baits resembling Big Game Twitchbaits/Jakes/Slammers, etc.

From what I've read, Red Cedar seems to be a good choice and is cheap to get me started. I don't own a planer. Is one essential to get a bait perfectly true/parallel and for it to run well? I'll likely be picking my wood out from a pile at Menards and will try to find the straightest I can find but, it's wood (and Menards wood at that) and will probably never perfectly straight.

How crititical is this?

This will be my first question. I'm sure there will be many more once the project(s) get started!

no need for a planer, do you have a table saw?

From time to time I have access to a table saw but don't own one.
I do have a new sliding 10" compound miter saw.
