| Looking for inexpensive electronics for a river boat. I've been looking at several units that range between $80 and $100. Boat doesn't get used that often, so I don't want to spend more than $100.
No need for SI, DI, GPS, or similar features. Essentially I want whichever model offers the most accurate depth and temp reading for the money. |

| This may or maynot help, but if you already have a decent unit in another boat (i do not know if you have another boat, so its an assumption on my part) Go and buy another transducer and mounting bracket. The just switch the head unit from one boat to the other when needed, it would work great for you since you said it doesnt get used very much.
I bet you can find those parts online for less than the cost of another unit that would just sit around most of the time. Just a thought

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | I have a small huminbird I got from cabelas for 89 several years ago. The water temp and depth work fine on it, not a bad unit for the money. Still raining here I'll go check the model number when it lets up and get back to you with it. |

| Thanks. I assume its one of the Piranha models. That is similar to what I'll end up with; plain, old 4" monochrome unit. I did some research a few weeks ago and some of the reviews (not sure which brand) stated that temp was off by a few degrees on some models and depth was inaccurate on other models. I realize that for the price you can't expect much in terms of accuracy compared to the upper-end units. I just want that one model/brand that is the most reliable of the options available.
I looked into the separate transducer/mounting bracket option and it would cost about the same (or less) as getting an entirely different unit. That was actually my original plan, but I'd rather just get something cheaper so I don't need to worry about breaking my good unit or going through the hassle of transferring it from boat to boat. |

Location: sneaking out to get on the water ;-) | Just checked mine is a 170 but lookimg at cabela's they replaced it with the piranhamax 175. I might have gotten lucky with mine but my buddy runs the newer lowrance hds units and we get similar depth readings when we talk about spots. By no means the detail or even comparable but for depth and temp it works. |
