I believe it will hold over 100 yards of 100lb braid, does anyone use the 50 size with 100lb? Any thoughts on performance? It is going to be used for mag dawgs and the occasional pounder. Thanks.

I started with 60s and got rid if them and moved to 50s We have 4 of them. The guts of each reel are exactly the same. But 50s are smaller and easier to palm.

I buy a 150 yd spool of 100 and 80 and put 75 yards on each. At the end of the season I reverse it to put the new line on the outside. I fish a bunch and have been doing this for XX years with out any problems. NO BODY makes 75 yard cast.

That's what works for me.

"NO BODY makes 75 yard cast. "

Partly true, with an Amb Rocket or a Toro loaded with a 3 ounce glider(and some wind in the back), you can easily cast 80-85 yards. With an empty spool, you have a limited line pickup then.

You put a backer line on first then the new line so you have a full spool.

Again, I have been doing it for XX years, and it works.

How much backing do you guys put on. I never can put enough on, and then have to put more braid on. Thanks Doug

I start with 1-1½ foot of backing, then i spool the amount of braid on i need, and if i´m way under i fill the spool with backing(on top of the braid) and when the spool is filled up nicely i ad 2-3 feet´s of backing, and then flip the hole thing around. Now the reel has a proper amount of line, and backing.

On my abu 5501c3 witch i think have roughly the same spool size as my toro 51, i have 1½ foot of backing and then 100 yards of 100lb tuf line, and it fits the spool perfect

Depends on the diameter of your lines. I match my mono backing to the same diameter as my braid or as close as I can then figure what the reel holds. Then you can measure out enough to leave room for just the amount of braid you wanta use. Reel in the said amount of mono then fill with braid. I cheat and use my range finder.

I put the new line on an empty reel first, then I put the backing on the top until the reel is full. Then you have to reverse it by putting it on 2 old reels and then finally spool up the main reel. It takes a few minutes the first time. But after you have the correct backer on you are good to go.

This is what works for me, been doing it for xx years.
