Posts: 574 | I use Eagle claw 774s up to 5/0.. I think thats as big as I've seen.. Then I skip the 6/0 and use mustad 3551 7/0 and 8/0.. The 6/0 Mustads seem too soft to me, and I don't really ever need a hook in between the EC 5/0 and the Mustad 7/0

Posts: 833 | I up a lot of my hooks. I really like the Mustad 3551 trebles. I've never had a problem with them. They handle the abuse, they sharpen up very nicely, and the long shank makes it easier to get them out of a fish. I use the 7/0, 8/0, and 9/0. 9/0 are price, but they are the best hooks I've found for use on Pounders.

Posts: 365 | Never had any problems with Mustads -- I like the 3/0 round-bend short-shank trebles for crankbaits and smaller bucktails & the standard #3551 - 8/0 treble for my #10 & #12 bladed bigger bucktails ---- jim

Posts: 719 | We use VMC 9650BZ's on all the Bondy Baits. From 3/0 to 5/0. It's the only part of our baits from overseas because it's the best round bend musky sized hook we've found. I've had samples from other companies but just did not like them. They were either too soft or had the wrong bend.

The bigger ones are okay but my first choice is VMC. VMC hooks are awesome, they cost more but you get what you pay for. EC 774's are great ( very close to the quality of the VMC but cheaper) but like Jason said not available in a size bigger than 5/0, c'mon EC you are missing out on a lot of sales by not offering these in bigger sizes.

Posts: 574 | muddymusky - 1/31/2013 8:53 AM Eagle Claw made in USA. I voted Eagle Claw first and I like them but I also found that VMC black nickle hooks are great too. These hooks come on the new bucher baits, rapalas, and maybe others. These hooks seem sticky right out of the box so out of the two you listed, I vote VMC.

I am surprised that people dislike the 3551 6/0's. I find them to be the best overall hook for many reasons on many baits. Great gap for big jaw bones, they sharpen real nice, are plenty strong, not to heavy so you can up size on lots of baits without affecting action, are not crazy expensive and are readily available. BY FAR my most used hook, followed by the 3551 7/0's Anything under a 6/0 is too small for big fish in my opinion and experience.

I just picked up a few 6" baits and was going to swap out hooks this weekend is why I am asking.

Posts: 271 Location: davis,IL | The 3551's ( 7/0 ) are good if you sharpen them up correctly. I also use the 774"s ( 5/ 0)as is out of the box. I've had good luck with both and will continue to use these hooks till I find something I like better. I prefer long shanks on my hooks as I feel you get a better shot at hooking the fish.
