Posts: 469 Location: Downers Grove, IL | If you had a choice would you rather have a 150 Opti or pay up and get the 175 Verado for a Ranger 1850 RS. My understanding is that: The opti's get better fuel economy The opti's are cheaper to winterize The opti's have better top end speed and hole shot The opti's weighs around 80lbs less The Verado is quieter and with far less smoke The Verado has more mid range speed control The Verado has Electronic shift The Verado reduces the cost of oil Anything I'm missing? Any idea what the top end would be with each option?

Posts: 139 | my opinion is resale will be better with the verado. The trend towards 4S motors is real no matter how much people hold on to their 2 S motors. I have a 4S 175 suzuki on my reata and i am glad i went that way vs the 150 merc or Etec.

Posts: 5874 | Matt, The opti's get better fuel economy ----Probably The opti's are cheaper to winterize ----I think it's a wash The opti's have better top end speed and hole shot---- Probably The opti's weighs around 80lbs less --- True The Verado is quieter and with far less smoke --- Quieter yes. little to no smoke from opti's The Verado has more mid range speed control -- Maybe yes-Maybe no. The Verado has Electronic shift ---And throttle? The Verado reduces the cost of oil ---Variable depending on use. You still have to change it, maybe more than once a season. I agree with the above. Go with the Opti 175 pro-XS. Remember LOTW with KLY and my Opti?!

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | After having a 4 stroke and a DFI I have to say that my next one will be a 4 stroke. True they're probably not as fast, but the lack of $45/gal oil and the increased life in longevity for power-head (prospectively) seem like the way to go for me. BTW, opti's do smoke, but not like the old ones. At idle with a tailwind you can smell the distinct burnt oil smell of opti oil. Not that it's much of a game changer, but it is there.

Posts: 5874 | $45/gal? You obviously didn't/don't buy from bulk dealers. Last I bought in April this year was $26/gal. For Opti oil. And that is a variable cost depending on how much you run your rig. I'd go through less than 3/4 gal per tank on average. That means I used nearly $200-250 fuel and about $20 oil. That's not a huge expense. Certainly not enough to sway my decision of which motor to buy.

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | Shep, when the closest bulk dealer is 20 miles away and often times not around when you need it you gotta pay the pipper (another reason for 4-stroke IMOP). I payed $45 at Gander last year and almost laid an egg! Also, the best bulk price I've found is around $30 In my 225 in a typical 100 hour year (I remember those days) without driving WOT much I would burn 2 tanks full easy (2.5-3 gal I can't remember). So at today's pricing of $30-$45 a gal you could be talking about $150-$300 in just oil. Maybe it's a factor and maybe it's not, that's up to the buyer. Steve, they do burn fuel much cleaner I will say. But if you want to compare clean to clean you have to also look at any 2 stroke and the fact they still blow some oil back into the water. The new DFI's are LIGHTYEARS ahead of the old ones (remember the old tower of power?) but it's still a consideration for some people.

Posts: 469 Location: Downers Grove, IL | Unfortunately, unless I wanna drop 40K+ on a brand new 1850 LS, I don't have much choice on my motor. I've searched for weeks and only located 3 boats, 2 with 150 opti's and 1 with a 175 Verado. I don't have much experience with Verados and the increase in price is around 4k, which could be spent on electronics or a kicker to eliminate the smoke or smokeless conversation altogether. This is a boat I plan on having for a number of years, not just for fishing but taking clients out and cruising with the growing family. I plan to troll a lot....kings on lake mich, eyes on erie and Skis on LSC. Tough decision to buy now or wait 2 years and get the wider, longer 1850 LS with hopefully more motor options and a discounted price. How badly can someone harm an Opti or Verado if they didn't break it in properly? Both engines have around 60 hours and are 2010's? Any issues with the 2010 models? And yes Shep I couldn't ever forget that week on the woods with you and KLY. Awesome memories. Edited by thedude 1/23/2013 8:00 PM

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | For a $4000 go opti for sure and get a kicker! The small block engines were/are better then the big blocks and with the money you save the kicker will add years to that motor.
