For those of you who have GPS and Chartplotters.....what do you think of them??

I'm rigging out a boat that will be dedicated towards trolling. I haven't done much trolling, but it looks like I'm gonna learn in 2003.

How many of you use your GPS/Chartplotter to navigate your trolling runs?? What about marking follows, fish, etc ??

What other uses are there?? Should I get a GPS/depth sounder combo, or get both units seperate?? (ie, a lowrance X91 and a GPS)

Does anyone have one that they can't live without?? If so, why??

Does anyone have one that they wish they could get their money back?? If so, why??
Thanks.

I have had a Garmin 180 chartplotter for 3 seasons. I use the micro G cartridges which are available for every state, Lake of the Woods and coastal waters. I use mine both for Saltwater and LOTW. It is incredible. I found an underwater reef in LOTW many years ago which is not on the map and it always took me 30 minutes or more to find it without the GPS. Now I go to within 10 feet of it every time since I marked it on the GPS. Navigation is simple, the unit is pretty intuitive to use. The 180 is no longer made, but can still be found new on ebay, under warrantee. They usually go for about $300 +/-. It records the route you used that day and keeps the track showing on the screen until you clear it. You can exactly duplicate trolling runs by going over the same track. These units make you a smarter, better fisherman. They are worth the money spent. I cannot tell you how many reefs I have now marked on my GPS that really produce muskies in summer. I'm talking about multiple fish on each reef. Save time when planning your fishing day. I paid about $600 for mine and now it can be found for about $300. Good Luck!

I have a Garmin 162 Chart/Plotter and just love it. I got it late in the season so I did not use it very much but for the times that I did it seemed to be very accurate as I was comparing my position on the 162 to some known spots and some charts that I have. I would suggest a seperate Plotter and Depth finder just would hate to lose both if one or the other failed

I have the Lowrance X-15. I love it! Best sonar I've used, and the GPS works great. I use it to mark spots, as a plotter when trolling, and have the Hotspots MMC. They have a new release out right now, and I am upgrading to get the latest HS maps MMC's.

Lowrance is releasing several new units soon. Not really sure, but you can bet they will be top notch, as always.

I have a LMS 350A and would never set up a boat with out a GPS on board. My next unit will be a X15 or Global map!

Looks like the X-15 or even the X-16 (if I have enough $$) is the way to go. Just checked out Lowrance's website. And talked to a few others....the X15 is the machine to have.

Thanks Guys.

Saw an add for X-15CI last night. Not sure where, but they were only $100 more than the X-15MT! $799, I think. That is a great price!

The new models will be introduced shortly, so if you want a great deal, hang in a few weeks. If you want the lastest and greatest, hang in there a few weeks.[:p]

Steve, I can't recall where I saw it. Saw it last night somewhere. Magazine maybe? On the net? I just can't recall. I will look tonight. It was for the sonar only. Thats a pretty good deal. I think that's what I paid for my X-15.

What is the BEST ONE out there?

Kunta Kintay! I found you!!!

Phishin, I found where I saw the X-15CI! I was X-Mas shopping for myself at Gander Mountain, when I looked up, there it was. Big ole RED tag on it. $799!

Now, please note that this is for the Sonar only. You'll still have to get the GPS module, which comes with MapCreate 6, and the MMC reader. Not sure of the price at Gander. I forgot to ask. Doh! $299 at Thornes.

Jason, I don't know about the color units, but I haven't seen a sonar to compare with my X-15. I love it. Great screen size, great resolution, and I get good bottom readings, even at speeds above 50. Can't wait to try out the new Navionics/Hotspots mapping next spring![:praise:]
