Posts: 44 | Hi, what's your favourite rod for fishing Magnum Bulldawgs? It's not a question about a special brand. More about the specifics you think are a must. H or XH-power? 7'6"; 8'; 8'6" or 9' in length? etc. Thanks!

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | For Mag dawgs only I use a TI XH. You do not need an XXH unless you plan on chucking pounders with it. The XH is also a great all around rod, you can use for pretty much anything in your box... EXCEPT pounders. You don't need an XXH

Posts: 2687 Location: Hayward, WI | I would say most are using 8'6 or 9' rods. I've used both lengths, both work well, but I prefer the 9' rod. H or XH is hard to comment on as they vary from one manufacturer to the next. In general H or XH is the way to go for Mag Dawg sized baits but check the lure rating more than anything. I'd normally like something with an upper rating of 8-12 oz. To throw a wrench into that the St Croix Legend Big Dawg is supposed to throw baits up to Pounders and it has a max rating of 12 ounces - 3-4 oz less than a Pounder. A good rod for mag dawgs should be fairly beefy but not a pool cue. Needs to flex in the tip some for tossing baits and more importantly keeping fish pinned up during the fight. I like my Tackle Industries 9' XH. I used a St. Croix Big Nasty a little last year and that handled 8 oz baits well too. The TI is a slightly softer rod with the Big Nasty being a little faster. Both do a great job. Tucker

Posts: 265 Location: Hudson,WI | BNelson - 12/28/2012 9:11 AM 9' Big Nasty is a sweet mag dawg rod I'm thinking the same thing. I mainly used my Big Dawg, but after this year I'm thinking about switching to the big nasty, and only using the Big Dawg for pounders.
