So when we troll we all know exactly how fast we are moving our lure through the water thanks to Gps, speedo's etc. My question is, how fast is an average retreve reeled in on a cast with say...a deep diving crankbait or bucktail? What kind of speed range are we talking here?

I like to troll crankbaits 3.5-4.5 mph. Does anyone realy crank them that fast on a cast?

I have cast ahead of my boat while trolling. at three mph the boat goes to the crank bait faster then i can reel it in.

3 feet per second = 2mph
5 feet per second = 3.4mph
6 feet per second = 4mph.

Figure out how much line your reel picks up per turn and then how many turns you can do per second.

jeffinpickering hits the nail on the head. mathematics plays into the problem solving. sorta like man hours per fish.

However fast you can reel, a Muskie will outpace you by 6 times or so.

CAN outpace you. They choose to not outpace my lures as often as I would like.

I don't have any accurate numbers, but I don't believe we could crank at the pace of even a medium speed troll for long. Toss a Cowgirl out behind the boat moving 3 MPH and see how it rides in the water. Reel it in slowly. Does it feel quite a bit harder than if you had just made a cast and cranked it back?

Just guessing that a typical cast and retrieve pace might be around 2 mph but I'm guessing.

That is about what I was thinking 2-3 mph tops.

I've trolled Cowgirls up to 5.5 MPH with fantastic results, and I can tell you for sure there is no way I can actually retrieve one that fast myself, not even close. I agree with the last couple answers, 2-3 mph, maybe 4 but i would doubt that its sustainable.

casting in front of a boat trolling a consistent speed with a small single 7 fluted blade bucktail cranking as fast as I can I can get just over 3mph. that is with a 5.4to 1? revo.
