Hey all, I wanted to try a quick foil job on my new crankbait before ice up. I needed to see if/how the additional mass affects the lure’s action. I want to try a few more foil type patterns over the winter. I was hoping it would turn out a bit more natural or realistic looking, but I seem to be missing something? Maybe I need some shading/blending near the head, maybe stencil a fin on it too. Thanks for the approvals guys. I know the contrast and flash are good so the fish should like them; I’m just striving for some enhancement. Fun stuff, I guess if the development stops the fun will too

Posts: 615 Location: Madison, WI | Mike, Beautiful job....I love it! Just started experimenting with foil this week myself....there is definitely a learning curve! Did you glue netting on first and then foil over it, or embed the pattern on the foil? Tight paint work as well MS

Thanks guys. I put the mesh on the bait first. I used this metal meshing stuff that’s used for sculpting. You can find in the section where they sell clay. I thought it would add a lot of weight but after cutting out the profile shape the two pieces only weighed a gram. I then super glue tacked it to the side of the bait. It’s tough to get it to form flush to the contours of my bait. I then brushed on a slow cure (60min) epoxy into the mesh and edges. After it cured I filed and sanded the edge transitions smooth. Then I primed the bait and painted a little. I then used the shiny type of duct tape, cut out the profile, and stuck it to the bait. The stuff buffs nicely and I did that a few times throughout the process. I used a small tipped eraser to work/poke it into the mesh good. I then did a little more painting right on the foil and over the edges. If you paint on the foil you can wipe it off afterwards with some alcohol on a rag, it will clean off and shine up the top of the foil leaving the color in the trough. I then put first coat of etex on making sure to fill in the mesh area good. Then finished painting the bait and put one more coat of etex on.
