Why is it that one year a guy can slay the fish on a Squirko and the next can't buy a fish on the bait.

Or other similar situations, what causes the changes. Last year definitely seemed to be a Jerkbait type bite, while most of this year seemed to be a bucktail bite. To bad it took me till August to figure that out.

Anyway tips on this topic, and tips on figuring these types of patterns out early would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Mike,my conclusion(opinion) is that for me all the same types of lures on the same waters fished year after year have always worked for me!Its just knowing the timing of throwing said lures. What is the one constant that is always different from year to year? Its the season, weather,Starting from the previous winter(NOW)untill season opens.I feel this determines how/where/when to fish and what baits will take fish in that situation. As an example this year early the suspendo bite was very good as always but the fish seemed to ride high for alot of that bite and jerks took the cake when all my deep-divers brought zippo! If this winter is crumby snowmobling/ice-fishing(conditions)for me it will be like last season and I definatly will not be fishing under the fish. This is of course SPECULATION on my part, but whatever works and keeps that confidence level at 100%.For me timing by conditions is everything.Handy

What really makes me scratch my head even more is how much these patterns can differ from one fisherman to another. Ask three different guys what the current hot lure is and you are bound to get three different answers.

Mike, I know when you were in the middle of a bucktail bite this year, I was finding everything active on gliders (kind of a role reversal there I think). The next guy is probably nailing them on topwater.

I think the biggest thing is once you nail a few fish on a particular bait you tend to keep it wet alot more, and the direct results are more fish on that bait, resulting in a bit of a forced pattern.

Then again what the heck do I know??

Confidence, Confidence, Confidence!

Every bait is going to work, the only difference is how you present it. When presenting a bait with confidence you are probably doing the little things you need to do, such as giving a little longer pause or changing the direction of the bait mid retreve.

Hi MIke I've noticed the same thing!!! There's been some years in which topwater has been fantastic and some years that it's tough to even move fish on the baits. It also appears that certain lakes get into their funks while others are red hot. There's a lot of variable that may play into why these patterns occur. It could be a shift in the amount of the forage base in the lake, the availablity of a certain type of forage base, fishing pressure, change of the underwater enviroment(example weed die off, or elimination, new cribs added or deterioated). I think the best way is to keep a detailed log on what type of events happened that year...whether it was weather conditions for the prevailing year, a huge insect hatch, and a decrease in young of the year perch.etc. Hopefully through time we'll see a pattern that may suggest what may be the hot method for the year.

But no doubt, it's going to be like any other year. By going through the motions a new hot pattern is unveiled. That's the beauty of fishing. You never can tell when that great day on the water will be.

catch ya later,
Krappie
