Posts: 496 | So, we have had a good fall of fishing here in NC , some of the fellows use bogos to hold and weigh fish . I am not trying to tell someone what they can or can't do but I would like to open the discussion on the issue . I personaly don't use bogas and have seen them tear through the fishes bottom jaw in too many photos . I would like to hear from guys who have used them in the past and seen fish harmed or no issues for that matter, links to the issue and thoughts from guys who handle Muskies more often than we do . I would like to hear as many FACTS as possible . I get it that catching Muskies with huge hooks puts holes in them and all of that . But, If holding fish verticle with bogas kill them , then I would like to bring some light on the situation

If the muskie bites the pound chunk of rubber with hooks in it, that's the muskies fault. The bogas seem mean.. People look stupid holding muskies with bogas in pictures anyway.

Posts: 415 | Veritical hold IMO with Boga's is a big No-No, however any vertical hold is a no-no. I myself have never used a Boga, but my opinion has been if it keeps someone from flopping it down on shore or in the bottom of a boat then it probably isn't so bad. In the end though if you plan to fish muskies its probably best to just learn to hold them properly, its not all that hard.

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | I have said before and will say again. I hold my musky with a boga to the mouth BUT I hold the belly and fish level with my other hand. I have slit my fingers enough with the gill rakers. And personally, I don't care if I look stupid to you or not. I have my reasons for doing so and have not hurt a fish yet. I will continue to do it the safest way for me and the fish both, like it or not.

Posts: 553 Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | If you catch enough muskies holding them with your own 2 hands (with a glove if needed) is safer for both you and the fish. BOGAgrips were made for saltwater fish; this is the only application for a BOGA. Edited by MuskyMATT7 11/21/2012 12:36 PM

Posts: 1146 | That's what they make the Musky Armor and Lindy gloves for. Probably cheaper than a Boga grip too.

Posts: 1207 Location: Pigeon Forge TN. | Never gave the gloves a thought, didn't want to remove any more slime than needed. Will have to get a set. When fishing alone ( most of the time ) I also use the boga to roll them to their belly when I need to calm them down to remove the hooks faster

Posts: 1530 | i live on st clair. thru the years bogas were invented, mind you for saltwater fish. too many guys tow a fish after caught and drown them. with their mouths held open. verticle holds are ,well everyones heard that story.. most experienced guys just dont boat or photo-op fish unless their large trophy class.. shaking junior fish boatside far increases a fish that not only swims away but lives.

I have one and seldom use it.. mostly to make it easier for my guest / partner to hold a fish for a pic. I see so many pics of bogas used incorrectly.... I still do it the old fashioned way, pick em up outta the net by hand....

I got some Rapala gloves at fleet farm for like 5 bucks. They won't do a thing about hooks or teeth, but it is perfect for the gill plate grab. I would definitely recommend them.

Great for getting grips on slimy fish. Makes things ten times easier. But as Nolan and my right pinky finger will tell you, they don't stop hooks at all.

I have heard that picking fish up under the gill plate was bad for them. Is this true? I never hold fish up vertically with a boga but I use it to land fish out of my canoe since a net is not practical. Also when fishing alone it would be pretty hard to put your rod down and put gloves on while in the middle of fighting a fish

I never lift a fish with the Boga grip. I do the same in the net. It keeps me hands safe and makes getting hooks out way easier. I never lift a fish with the boga - ever.

Posts: 2376 Location: Chisholm, MN | If you hold them by the gills wrong, that is bad too. There is a recent video, not to name names, but it shows a very poor job of handling a large musky. Grab them by the right gill with your right hand or visa versa and support the body with your other hand without wrenching on the gills and it is perfectly fine. It makes for much better pictures also.

IMO the Boga is a horrible tool, the one and only time I used it was on a pike that was around 38", when I gripped the Boga to the lower jaw the pike went into a death roll wrapping the leader and power pro about 20x, in, around & thru the gills as well as wrapping & pinning the bait, WHAT A MESS! Now the Boga had created a dangerous situation for me and the fish, having to cut the line and leader in several places and cutting multiple hooks to undo the mess the using boga made, during the whole process putting my hands in harms way.

Posts: 1023 | A death roll with your hands in the gill plate would have been worse IMO. That's what happened to me and a 5/0 siwash trailer hook went as deep as a hook can go into my forearm. Took all of the docs strength to pull it out of the contracted muscle. That hurt.

![]() Posts: 114 | I have a Boga that is used for specific fishing only. When we wade and fish the river from the banks and do not have a net, we will typically boga the fish to control it when removing hooks. The fish rarely leaves the water with the Boga in it's mouth, and if it does we always support the fish's weight and body. Any other time fishing from a boat, just net the fish and get your fingers dirty

Posts: 290 Location: Oconomowoc, WI | I don't use a boga myself, but it sure seems like a good tool to protect inexperienced muskie fisherman and the muskies in their hands. Rather take good care of my friends and family than worry about the health of a fish TOO much.
