Thursday night I was muskie fishing Monona there were A couple of rowing teams in the area. There was A group of 3 rowers and 1 motor boat comming at me I was only going about 1/2 mile A hour with the trolling motor I heard the guy in the motor boat tell all 3 boats which direction to go in order to go around me I think it was 2 go to the right 1 to the left.I did my figure 8 looked behind me and there they were one of the row boats ran right into me dead center of the boat.no one got hurt but the end of there boat was broken off they apolagized to me many times. No damage done to my boat

I also have experienced the UW rowing team coming my way several times this fall on Lake Monona. Each time I have quickly re-positioned my boat to shallow water to avoid any chance of a collision like you experienced. Basically all of the rowers are facing the stern and I can see how this crash could happen. Your lucky someone wasn't hurt.

the row team passed so close to me last year that the guys had to hold their oars up in the air on one side to avoid hitting my boat! All i could say was "are you serious?" and none of them said a thing and went on their way. This happens alot, there is 3000 acres of lake on Monona, yet somehow they prefer to row the weedlines as perfect as a gps chip!

You might want to check that. A powered boat is the responsible party.

Knew a guy on Pewaukee that got hit by a sailboat during a sailboat race. He was on his trolling motor, and he got the ticket, and his insurance paid the damage to the sailboat.

It's not like these things can turn quickly. You see them coming. Why wouldn't you pick up and move a short distance. Why take the chance?

It's actually the rowing club that rows on Monona. The UW crew team rows on Mendota, leaving from the Porter Boathouse.

Sailboats not under power and non-powered boats have the right away. Simple boaters safety.

Yeah I've had to get out of there way several times this year. Once I was snagged and had to free spool away or they would have hit me for sure (gotta love the bunny button on the terrova). Just glad they didn't snag my line cause they were cruising!

You guys are making me glad I live in NW WI. I've never had to dodge a rowing team. If I saw them headed in my direction from a ways off I'm not sure my first thought would be to get out of their way. Makes (a little) sense if I think about it but not sure it would be my first thought.

Does that mean when you are stationary too?

I remember reading somewhere that 'fishing vessel' trumps the right of way issue- is that only vs other vessels under power or does it apply to wind and hand-paddled craft as well?

I typically use a trolling motor to position the boat, so I move and give right of way.

I agree with that but it doesn't matter what the law is when they just keep coming towards you.

I've had a couple of close calls this year and it is not the UW team. This must be some sort of club as the rowers are young kids. The kids rowing can't see you, the responsibility has to be with the 'Coach' in the little boat with the bull horn. I've never had an issue with the UW team, their coaches appear to pay attention to the other boats on the water and they have always stayed clear of my boat.

Saw them coming tonight and reversed my track and went back another direction. Glad I did, caught my first monona legal shortly after.
