I know that this has been talked about before but what rod do you use to throw your bucktails??? Looking to buy one from me to me for X-mas, need input.
Thanks,

I've used several and if you want to reach deep into your pockets, you can't do better than Thorne Bros. Diamondback, mine are 7'6". The Med. rod is great for all but the biggest bucktails, the MH is very versatile for most tails and lots of baits.

Our Premier PM72MHF has been a wonderful addition to our lineup. It handles up to 2 1/2oz. If you like our Avid Rods, we have the AM70MHF or the AM76MHF both handle up to 3oz.

I second the 7'2" Premier. Picked mine up last year and it was a joy to use this year! Best rod I have!

I use the 7' Avid for most bucktails, when using the bigger bucks, I go to my 7'6" Premier.

Nothing makes a better gift then the Cadillac of bucktail rods. The G-Loomis MUR914CX-MB is the best out there but the price is there too at $325. Then you can go with their 7'7" MUR914C-MB or their short 6'5" MUR774C-MB wich can handle 10 inch reef hawgs and 35 pounders no problem.

The bigest possitive you get from a Loomis is they are very lightweight but have enough backbone to bring in the big ones. [:sun:]

8' Lamiglas would be my choice. Best figure eight rod I have ever used.[;)]

Sputterbug,

I thought I would reciprocate for your post helping me on the trolling rods. I have two bucktail rods. 7'10" St. Croix Premier for bucktails 3/4 to 1 1/2 ounce and a St. Croix 7'6" Premier for heavier tails and longer double tails. I also throw 1 1/2 to 3 ounce spinnerbaits with the 7'6". I matched the 7'6" with a Garica 6500 Big Game this year and I really like it. I like the longer length for figure 8'ing away from the boat and getting the 8 deeper without having to get on you knees. I think longer rods (7'6" to 8'0") offer more advantages than standard seven foot musky rods. In fact my jerkbait rod is now a heavy action 7' St. Croix. I have gotton rid of all my rods under 7 ft. I guess in the end it depends on the type of tails you throw. Most of mine are 1 to 1 1/2 ounce built for burning. I like the faster tip on the 7'10" for burning. The 7'6" is for leverage on heavier tails and spinnerbaits that the 7'10" doesn't give me.

Hope this helps some. Thanks for your input on the trolling rod thread.

I currently use a 7'6" and 8' st croix premier, but am going to get an 8'6" all star for their light weight (and lengh). The st croixs are nice, but really heavy compared to an all star. I used to have a 7'6" cabelas fish eagle and it was good til it broke.

Hi,
I have to agree with the Thorne Bros. DiamondBack. I have the 7'2 medium and it works great with all my bucktails. I prefer a fast to extra fast action so it works perfect for that reason also. My dad prefers a moderately fast action and has a 7'2 Bucara by Gloomis. I think it might be made with the same blank as the muskie stick but it is purple and made for saltwater. However, he really likes it and might be something to look at.
good luck,
