Subject: Garage Storage

Greetings,

I built a nice big garage last fall to store my boats in. Now, my boats are all in, and my gears(whatever the season is) is just sitting around all over the floor. My one claim to garage storage fame is my ice auger rack I designed. I know I need to build shelving but am horrible at visualizing what needs to go where. I have a great lure hanging system in my basement for storage, but I am limited to ideas for my garage for really getting things organized. I'd like to be able to store alot of planos, rods, loose tackle etc, out of the way. Overhead rod storage that I could reach from in my boat would be fine. I'd love to see some photos of the shelves, cabinets, rod racks and storage that you guys use for everything fishing/hunting/ and otherwise and have modified over the years for your garages, that work well for you. Thanks so much in advance!!

No pictures - but I recomend hanging one huge shelf from the rafters (assuming that they can support the weight). I have 2 walls in my garage that I bolted 2x4s too along the whole length of the garage wall to support the shelf on the wall side. I constructed my shelves out of 2x4s and 1/2" OSB - the dimensions are roughly 24' long and 40" wide. I built them in 8' lengths on the garage floor by making the frame out of 2x4's, putting a couple extra 2x4's in the middle of the frame for support. Then 2 people lift up the shelf and set one edge on the 2x4 that is already bolted to the wall, then use some sort of connection on the other side to hang it from the rafters. I used heavy duty eye bolts and coated cable to hang my shelves. I have seen others use 2x4's with unfinished ceilings where they could just bolt things through. Repeat the process 3 more times and you have a shelf that is 24' long, about 7' off the ground so nobody hits their heads, there is no support going down to the ground so it doesn't take away any parking or underneath storage, and it holds big bulky items out of the way very well.
I have one shelf that is full of bags of duck decoys and goose decoys. I can't imagine my garage without them.

Gotta throw out some "HUGE PROPS" to my Uncle Bruce's garage in Indiana. He built a 2000sq ft garage below a 2000 sqft rental property on Webster lake-----he currently has 11 boats of various sizes------riding mowers------a tractor-------every bait imaginable-----full storage for ice fishing gear--everything from 3 man shelters to augers----to terminal tackle-----all stored away in a secure, heated sanctuary-----way to go Bruce------you know how to ROLL! Hope to make it down, sometime, before the season ends-----Indiana muskies beware!----Pat

i built a mezzanine storage that has quick access to larger in-season equipment and also off-season storage. boat is "in" in the summer but goes to a storage facility for the winter so that the ice-rigs can have access. the underside of the mezzanine stores rods and the back-wall holds tip ups/auger/etc ... planos underneath the work-bench off-season and either in the boat or atv boxes during the season (open water/deer/ice). there is a plano system for muskies, bass, panfish, ice and deer-hunting so that it's easy to just lock-and-load to head out. season-to-season hardware/spare-part/tool specific boxes included ... some cross over (first-aid/flashlight/knife/battery/baggies etc... type) and are constantly re-stocked.

had to learn this over time especially with the ice-fishing that the best way to go is to be ultra-organized and especially with 4 kids. it has to be easy or it won't happen as often. we do the same thing with underarmor/hats/gloves/boots etc...).

i have a friend who's boat is like a walgreens store. it has everything you could imagine needing. i've tried to use that mentality for boat, atv so that you never wonder whether or where something is that you might need.
