| Spring rattle baits rods and reels. Im looking forward to adding this technique to my arsonal for next year. what rods an reels are most of you using? I would like to go with a rod in the 8ft range and looking at pairing it with a lews speed spool with 28" of line pick up. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | I fish rattlebaits alot during prespawn period and I use a 8' MH musky rod and a curado 300 spooled to the brim with 50 or 65lb braid. This combo throws rattlebaits a mile and also I can smoke them back to the boat. IMO the leader that you choose has more to do the overall action when using rattlebaits. Greg Thomas makes one from Stealth Tackle which works great (6" of 174lb single strand wire with a loop at each end) and can be made on your own very easily. I also use 8" 40lb seven strand leaders that are double crimped. |

| for me the weight of the rod itself is as important as the action / what baits it will handle best. i have a croix legend bass series LBC710HF "swimbait" rod", rated at 1-4 oz baits, with a curado 301 & 50lb power pro super slick on it that i bought primarily for throwing jigs and it does that great but i also realized that, for me, it is also perfect for rattlebaits and any other small / lighter weight baits that i want to throw. the rod only weighs 5.5 ozs and with the curado weighing 10.5 ozs it's a super light package that's tough for me to put down. the rod has good backbone and it does NOT have a "floppy" top end like some flippin sticks... |
