Does anyone know if there is a map that can be found on the internet that shows the location of all the resorts on Sabaskong bay? I am headed up there this fall and, as a safety measure, would like to know where there are resorts for access to gas, etc in case I need assistance while on the water. I appreciate any help anyone can provide.

this probably isn't ideal for you but if you have a map you can go down this list and mark it up...Also if you have a good GPS chip, which certainly is almost required out there, some resorts will be marked with a "M" on the islands...There's always going to be plenty of resorts out of Morson and Nestor Falls on mainland so depending on where you stay you shouldn't be too far from help if needed...

off the top of my head resorts you might want to look up are Duck Bay Lodge, Split Rock Lodge, Sabaskong Bay Lodge...look em up and mark up the map accordingly

You need to get yourself a Canadian Hydrographics map #6214. There will be little red symbols (reference the legend, can't remember exactly what they are right now) that point to different resorts. Then I'd do what Brian suggested and look up a bunch of lodges and mark it on your map.

Red Wing, Buena Vista, New Moon Lodge, Grassy Narrows Lodge, Rex Tolton's Miles Bay Camp, Mylies Place, Sabaskong Bay Lodge, Kings Island Lodge, Split Rock Narrows, Canadian Haven Resort, Duck Bay Lodge... should get you started. If safety is a concern I wouldn't venture west of the boundary on map #6214. Big water and can get pretty isolated out there depending on where you go.

I also consider the Canadian Hydrographics Map #6214 a must. It indicates the resorts in the area as well as the channel with the buoys clearly marked. It also has a majority of the hazards marked and is considered the best map for the area.

What lodge are you staying at?

All, thanks for your responses. I have an old hydro map and did not realize the markings indicated resorts. This is exactly what I was looking for. I also have the map chip for my GPS for Sabaskong and will make sure I am fully familiar with all the symbols. I will be staying at Mylies and will be doing most of my fishing either to the north or east. My range is a bit limited as I fish out of a runabout and the gas tank is not that big. Looking at the map I have, I now see where the resorts are and I can plan my routes to ensure I know where to get gas if it becomes an issue. I also appreciate th list of resorts and additional suggestions. Thanks again for the help and for taking time to answer my questions.

Jerry.

Jerry,

We'll go over the map thoroughly when you arrive so you can be comfortable and confident out on the water during your stay. You will want to update your old map to the new issue from about 10 years ago to make sure you have all the correct marker numbers for navigation.

If you'd like to get your hands a new one before your trip, call Thorne Bros and ask them to send you the 6214 Hydrographic map of Sabaskong Bay and area.

Cheers.

Don't forget Tamarack Lodge close to Dawson and painted rock island west of Morson. They will be there well into the fall as well

I don't know about cell phone service up there. It used to be spotty coverage and I didn't have a cell phone at the time so didn't pay much attention to it, so it could have changed and improved over the years since I was last there. With that in mind, if you have a marine band radio in the boat you can reach a lot of the resorts on the radio should you have an emergency. As I recall, the resorts up there monitored channel 68 on the marine band. Things may have changed with all of this since I was last there in 2003. Nonetheless, even if they've changed having a marine band radio in the boat is a good idea. I'm sure there are resorts and private cabin owners up there that still monitor marine band frequencies. I had a motor break down once and called on the radio. Reached a cabin owner who called the resort on the telephone and then the resort got on the radio and contacted me and came out and towed me back in. Marine band radios are a good piece of safety gear even in this day of cell phones.
