| if people think Paul makes alot of money off these things,,think again,, Paul does this has a party/gettogether,,when you have a party,football,bbq at your house do you make a profit off it??? Paul likes to see this thing happen with the profit second has he will tell you "90% of my friendships have come from doing these things"
Paul asks me to help out with some of his events and always writes me a check afterwards at which point I ALWAYS rip it up because I know how little these things make,,,its all about the fun

so on the second weekend of muskie season after a looooong off season you dont think those same fisherman are going to be out fishing anyways

Ignorance must be bliss. There's your sign....
This event for years fed muskies raised in ponds stocked into Metro lakes after volunteers harvested them out of the ponds when the are large enough with money raised through events like this as well, all above and beyond anything the MNDNR is doing. The muskies are stocked in the Metro, and you are fishing for them now.
OVER Pressure the resource? How many fish were caught? Very few, and all released as if the folks were just enjoying a day's fishing, and many would have been anyway. It was ONE day, and didn't even last until evening. You are just talking stupid because you perceive that water as 'yours'...it ain't.
Hard not to break my own rules here....

| It never ceases to amaze me when people complain about something that has brought so much joy to so many. I was fortunate to place in this event years ago and won a trip to Canada with my 2 young sons. That trip turned into another young man winning a charity auction to fish with us as well. He had never caught any fish over 15" in his life. After numerous northern pike and a 40" muskie , a young boy was hooked. My 2 sons would go on to fish with me for countless hours over the years and now fish this tourny even when i can't make it. For $35 I bought a lifetime of memories. As Steve said, all muskie nuts would be fishing that day anyway. Thank god for guys like Hartman who take the time to organize such an event. |

I've been away from the muskie game for a couple of years now. Haven't had the boat out of the garage. I haven't been on this message board at all in that time either. Haven't gone to any of the Muskie Inc meetings either. Kind of lost the drive and the passion for the game after my wife (and fishing buddy) died a few years back. Sometimes I miss the game truly. I miss the fun and excitement of fishing. The joy of making new friends and sharing the passion of the muskie. I miss doing something for the good of the resource, not for myself and my fishing but for the good fishing for everyone, you included. I've helped stock fish. I've given away thousands of my own dollars as tournament prizes in order to promote women in muskie fishing. I've helped with Muskie Inc events. Sat on the chapter boards. Did what I could do when I could do it. I'm not patting myself on the back here. Really, I'm not. As I said, I've been away from the muskie game and I don't have a reputation to make, a name to make for myeslf. Not sure that I care much anymore.
I can tell you one thing I DO NOT miss about the muskie world. That's people like you that love to pee and moan about how a tournament interfers with your fishing, or whatever the gripe might be. These tournaments help fund the money necessary to rasie and stock the fish for you to go fishing for in the first place. What have YOU given to the muskie world? What have you done to promote better fishing for all?? Huh?
Paul Hartman has done more for muskie fishing in Minnesota than most people dream of doing and yet you feel justified in posting and whining on here about a tournament on 1 weekend day in June that interupts your fishing.
Like I said, theres much about the muskie fishing game I miss at times and then it takes just one person to remind me why I dropped out of it all. Some people are so selfish.

Oh and by the way, there are many more out there that have done more and continue to do more for the muskie resource than I've ever done. Not only in Minnesota but all over the muskie world. Muskie fishing today is what is because many people got involved and helped carry the load in the muskie world.
Yes, I've done what I could to help but compared to others I've done very little. |

Will admit I'm not quite certain what shoulder dislaction statement means? I think I understand your comment but a bit uncertain.
I'm going under the impression though that my comments did hit home and that you've kind of thought things through a bit more and have maybe changed your mind about things? If so, then I say to you. Well done. It's never to late to learn and grow. And with that in mind....
I need to get my head out of my ass too and try and get back into the game again. I don't think I'm going to do it this year though I'm still trying to cope with many issues in my life. Maybe I've not lost the passion completley just have had it cooled down some?

I Thank You for the kind offer. Maybe some day I can take you up on it too. Right now though I'm not quite ready to seriously think about getting back in the boat yet. I'm making some changes in my life and if they pan out I might be able to think about doing some fishing again.
I know I would enjoy a day on the water with you. I remember your seminars well. I still chuckle every so often about your comment, "Waves on the water causes the wind to blow." Even after all these years, that has stuck with me and the point you were making with that statement. You have been able to get me to think a bit deeper about Muskies, their habitat, and their habits and that is a true gift.

You will not remember me but I will always remember you. Its with the heaviest of hearts that I remember your wife's struggles and your pain. However, through that I personally have learned several great lessons. None bigger then too enjoy every single moment I have with my family and friends. I can't tell you how many times I've let the words "Fishpoop" fly out of my mouth when my Austitic daughter would get a bird nest in my Calcutta or shout out "Dad look at that fish" while getting a huge follow in Canada. I can honestly say everytime things begin to ramp up my blood pressure when fishing with her. I'll belt out the words "Fishpoop" and she'll say "Ah dad thats gross" and she'll laugh and laugh. Its at that moment I'll remember these moments in time that I will not get back. The sport of Musky fishing is a little less better off without you in it. Sara and I just wanted you to know that.

I'm sorry that you are correct in that I do not remember you. Forgive me for that, please. I've been away for so long and have had so much on my mind over the years that I've just not have been able to remember everyone. I've had to let go and to forget on purpose as part of the healing process.
There's been so many good people in the fishing world that are gone now that it is truely difficult to remember them all and they deserve to be remembered too.
As for your post here. I THANK YOU!  Reading your kind words about me and my wife means more than I can express here in words. Words truely fail me at the moment. I had no idea whatsoever, none, cluesless, that our story touched you and others too so personally and deeply. I am moved to tears by your kind words. I don't know if they're tears of joy or of sorrow, perhaps a bit of both?
I can tell you that Mary, were she able to read your post, would be STUNNED by the kindness of your words and the fact that she was the center of all of this attention. I know she would be floored by it. I know she would be proud and pleased by her story touching others lives in such a positive and wonderful manner.
I've spent the last 8 years trying to understand why I had to lose her so young. I've asked God why? I've asked many times without any answer and I think now for the first time your post here has provided a bit of the answer to that question.
That you were able to take from our story, Mary's story, and share that with your daughter and share the joy of fishing with your daughter is truely a priceless gift.
I wish you and your daughter, tight lines, sharp hooks, big fish and a lifetime of shared fishing memories. Thank You again for this wonderful post today.
