Went up to Vermilion for the first time this weekend and quickly found there is no weeds and ALOT of rocks. I fished mostly sunken humps and some bars and made an effort to keep making contact with the rocks. But i raised only a one fish in the 30's and lost one, i don't know how big. My question is, was I on the right path to catching fish on a lake like that?

Where were you staying?-----the last time I was on Vermilion---there were LOTS of weed---and weed/stump spots to fish. Were you out East?----there are quite a few more rock spots there, The West has more weeds. Forty one thousand acres of water can be a tough nut to crack----it's just takes the right timing. There are some true monsters in that lake---keep at it!------Jobu

Yeah I was staying at Mckinley in Big bay. From my research i was ready to fish rocks but did not expect such an absence of weeds. It took some gettin used to, fishin the rocks. i was just lookin to see if i took the right course of action to catch fish for that situation. Not necessarily lookin for weeds

I've been fishing on and off since early July mostly on the east end and I have yet to find any weeds in more than 5 feet of water and 90% of the weeds I've found are back in Everett's Bay...Pike's Bay has none and every other spot my maps say should, haven't.

You need to stay at Vermilion Dam Lodge. Great place and centrally located so you can fish weeds on the West side and rocks on the East side.

I was up there last weekend too. Posted for some advice on the lake as well. We connected with one and saw one in the same area surface a few times, but did not see much action at all. There was almost no wind at all though and temps/weather was pretty stable with clear skies.

Fishing the rocks is a great place to find these guys. try tossing copper or brown color lures. Match the color of their main food source, red eyes. You can't go wrong on Lake V.

got a couple out there a few weeks ago just casting buoys only cause i didnt know where to go. easy to see them and cast in and around them. you can cast inside of them in some spots and just outside the buoys in others. easy way to catch a few out there too.

If you hire a guy like Josh Borovsky, he will put you on the big fish. If you don't know how to fish the lake, like me, spend the money because you will get a big fish in the boat. Otherwise, you're peeing in the wind.

We have hired and fished with guides 3 times on Vermilion. We learned a bunch and is why we are now able to fish the lake pretty well, and catch fish. However, we never caught a fish, let alone a big one, with any of the 3 of them. So just saying "spend the money you will get a big fish in the boat" is far from reality. Just sayin'.

I've been out with two of the best guides, not only on Vermilion, but I believe, anywhere.
We didn't happen to catch a fish, on either trip, but that's fishing.
I learned more, on those two trips, than I could have, in ten years, by myself.
Both guides were open and honest. Both trips were great experiences.
If you are new to the big V, or just need some professional help, and can afford a guide, it's the best fishing investment, you can make.
I'm finally catching fish, on a regular basis, whereas before I was struggling.
Catching fish, with a guide, is just icing on the cake.
The knowledge of the lake, is priceless!!!

What bucknuts said is excellent advise! A guide out there will shorten the learning curve.
