Location: Chicago | I'm just starting out and already have a mike hulbert rod with a te Calcutta 401. Should I consider a smaller rod with a Curado 301 for throwing smaller baits? Or does anybody have a better second combo to recommend ? Thanks |

I have a Curado 301 on a 8 ft St Croix. It's a great combo and a nice backup. It's also a nice change to alternate with my main setup and run a low profile reel for a few hours during the day. |

Hulbert rod and a Calcutta 401 - is actually a solid all around rod.
If I were you I'd do something like this.
Use the Hulbert/Calcutta - for blades 8's 10's 12's, larger cranks and larger rubber/swimbaits
New setup - I would look a maybe a little shorter rod 8' - 8'6" H and a put a higher speed reel on it and use that one for jerks, gliders and topwater and maybe the occasional smaller bucktail.
2 setups like that and I would think you'd be setup. |
