Posts: 157 | Guys, I have never fished muskies in the fall. Is there still a good bite after dark? How do you change your tactics/baits?

Posts: 3908 | Late fall at nite....Huge big cranks (modified 10" Jakes) trolled at night at the high breaks on the wind-blown side of the lake. The bigger the wind the less line you let out cause you gotta stay right on that outside weed line. When you feel the tick of the weed tops then rip the lure out and up and then allow the bait to stall while you keep a tight line. The later the season, the better this works. On a great night your reels will be all froze up long before the fish stop biting.

Posts: 114 Location: Kingston, Ontario | Fall will extend the time spent in the shallows and the length of time the fish are active. On clear days or clear lakes or both ie high light conditions in water the active periods or movements to shallower water may be at night due to the low light. Hence the tips already on topwater, blades high and top of weeds for success at night. There should still be plenty of good fishing during daylight, will just be deeper and will have to be more precise. If there is a night movement or active period for the fish there is likely to also be a daytime one since nightime movement would indicate probably the fish are moving or active twice a day.

There is a great night bite in the fall. I have spent a lot of time night fishing in the fall and the best advise I can give you about night fishing in general is to first focus on being completely comfortable with your structure. If you have gps, I suggest you lay out your trail in the day light on the spots you want to fish after dark. Give yourself a path to follow so you are certain you are keeping your boat and bait where you want it. Nothing more frusterating than finding yourself stumbling around getting too shallow or deep because you can't get your bearings in the dark. If you do not have gps, make sure you REALLY know the structure...very different at 1:00 am on a dark night. Baits and presentation are not a lot different with the exception of speed of your retrieve.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I don't stay out too much after dark in the Fall (in N-Mn.) When water temps drop into the low 50's to low 40's the fishing is only good untill an hr. after sun set,....... but there are some exceptions of course. Finding bait fish and casting/trolling those areas are a key to a successful trip,..... Not darkness. The Night bite is more of a Summer pattern where I fish,.... Not the Fall. Jerome

Posts: 962 | Sept and Oct it can be great. have not done as well in Nov. or once water temps are under 40. Straight cranking MX9's over the weed tops gets lots of violent strikes after dark. I like big spinnerbaits and double 10's also. Good luck, Jeff Hanson madisonmuskyguide.com

Posts: 94 | Top H20 how would you say the fishing is during the fall on vermilion? Im heading up that way during early october and have only been on the lake once before. Do you have alot of success? What type of baits would you concentrate on throwing?
