Posts: 3 | These cool nights have had me wondering when does the fall bite usually pick up? I assume it gets triggered by the water temps? I'm a very experienced fisherman but new to the skis so sorry for the noob question. I'm a waterfowl and bird hunting addict but I am hoping I can get myself to set down the shotgun for the muskie rod a bit this fall. Thanks for the info.

Posts: 991 | im not a seasoned muskie angler by any means but from last season I saw that the bite got really good once the water dropped into the upper 50s for me

Location: Eau Claire,WI | When you gotta break ice 500 yards to get out on the lake is when it usually starts! It depends from water to water and year to year. No set temp that I have noticed...Put down the gun and bow and get to slinging baits!

Posts: 1938 Location: Black Creek, WI | I typically don't transition my presentation to "fall" stuff until after turnover or when water temps are consistently holding 55F or below. Also... usually my lure selection changes are based on the location changes that often come with the summer to fall transition. Good Luck

Posts: 192 | Not sure where you are fishing but in the southern areas, like Lake Kinkaid the casting bite starts in mid September and runs until the turnover at the end of October or early November. Trolling goes from then until mid December most years.

Posts: 24 | According to Tony Rizzo's secrets of a muskie guide II, on page 118: "...there is no doubt that the magic water temperature is 56-58 degrees F. When the water temperature drops below the optimum, the muskies are noticeably slower and their feeding activities change."

Posts: 619 | I typically on rely on fish habitat and activity to start determining when things are really changing.. most of all the weeds play a big part on when i transition. When they start to breakdown patterms also start to breakdown

Tim, is this referring to mainly the surface temps e.g. - as measured by a locator? Guessing it might be. Thanks.

Posts: 24 | Yes. Figure that this knowledge comes from years of experience, and much of it before he would have had a complicated thermometer. I would guess surface temps.
