I currently use the timer on a Fugifilm waterproof digital camera (point and shoot )when fishing alone. I set the camera on a tripod head mounted in the rear seat post mount when I start out and use the timer when I catch a fish.

Now my question if I was to turn on the video function when I get a fish would I be able to get decent stills from the video and how would I do this? This would give me a couple of shots instead of a single without waiting on the 10 second timer.

You should be able to get some good stills. I would hold the fish in a few quick poses just to make sure they are not blurry.

i highly recommend getting a camera with a "burst" feature, such as what is found on the GoPros. this will let you setup the camera, hit record, and it will continuously snap a photo every X seconds (1, 3, 5, 15, 30, 60) until you hit the record button again. this is so incredibly handy and lets you get a high resolution photo of your catch whilst handling the fish for the least amount of time. not to mention GoPro's are waterproof so even if your hands are wet and full of slime you can still set it up and get it recording without worry.

if the camera takes HD video, you can also use software to capture a decent screenshot from the video and use that. however, it's more work and the quality isn't quite as nice as if it took an actual picture.

Good Call on the burst shot. Wish I thought about that the other day.

As for a GoPro, the stills on the image are not camera picture quality and the colour contrast is uaually a little off in low light, but will get the job done. But you can also set up a GoPro to do Burst shots.
