| Hey guys- got a fish on video this morning. How do you guys edit? it is 13 min. long and should be 2 min. Also how do you get music and an opening photo etc. ?

Location: Minnesota | i just got a go pro i was told you need to get video editing software i have no bought any yet but some one here will be able to tell you what to buy. i think for what you pay go pro should give a guy the soft ware needed |

| if you really, really want to get into it, then yes. for a gopro user in need of something quick, easy and free to edit muskie videos to share on muskiefirst...anything else would be a tie. |

| Steve's right that there are more powerful video editing programs, but as bshep points out for a simple, easy-to-use program Windows Movie Maker is the one to use (if you have a PC). If you have a Mac, iMovie is a great one and similar to Windows Movie Maker. Final Cut Pro X is one of the top notch programs available to consumers, though I think it might be limited to Macs. That's going to run you about $300 + additional programs for added effects.

| There are a lot of programs you can buy, or get other ways that i won't mention on here over the internet.. for pc you can use adobe premier, Sony vegas pro, and u can use other programs to add a lot of effects etc to it..
But basing off of what the OP put, it doesn't seem like he will need anything like that. Just use the free stuff, as i imagine you don't want to spend hours learning an advanced video editing program |

Roxio 2012 is inexpensive and does a good job on most files; is quite intuitive, has an open ended and proprietary interface for music tracks, allows for as many as 3 video and a couple audio overlays of still images, logos, and video tracks while the learning curve is really short. My son Keith had never edited a video in his life and started with Roxio, had it down in no time.
I use Roxio for short 720p pieces that don't require many overlays or special effects and to produce slide shows that have video tracks embedded. I use WMM for our OFM Radio files, simple and two step. I use FCP on my Mac and Adobe Premier on my PC for pieces our clients request, and believe me, the money spent on Adobe for a PC is well spent. Also very intuitive and easy to learn the basics, and if one spends a bit of time in tutorials the editing platform is very powerful and renders using a number of the more popular codecs. I just got a new copy, and really like the platform.
If you want free, Google free 'video editing platforms' and try a few out. I ended up trash-canning all of them for FCP and Adobe Premier.
Vegas is brutal as far as the learning curve goes, but is a very solid platform.
Editing anything in High Def can be an issue if your 'puter has a weak processor and not enough memory. Also a good idea to have discrete graphics at the least. Cheap to add a good card to a desktop, and that will also allow you to run two monitors if your machine build doesn't at this point. Make sure you have enough power supply for the card you choose.
75% of my stuff is done on a Dell desktop replacement 17" XP laptop. i7 processor, 16 gigs of memory, and a good graphics card with a gig of memory. My backup machine is an AMD quad core HP, again sporting discrete graphics with enough memory and plenty of ram.
My production desktop is a Dell Inspiron, and I pieced it together from the Dell Outlet store. AMD Quad core, extra ram from Crucial, and two hard drives, a mid grade graphics card, and I have about $550 in the machine. I like it.
Fast is good for what I do. I ain't no TV editor, that's for certain.
If all you want is to clip off unwanted footage, add a shot or two, and add audio, WMM will get it done. |

Do any of the programs you have suggested require you to convert your GoPro files to AVI before editting? GoPro offers Cineform which does this for you, but it's awful IMO.
I'd like to avoid using it if possible. I know WMM requires the conversion to AVI. It's a pain  |

| Corel VideoStudio Pro x5. Used to be Ulead Video Studio, and I used this quite a bit a few years ago for fairly simple movie-making tasks. It would have done everything you are looking for, so I have to assume the new-and-improved version since Corel bought them should do it all, too. $59. |
