Anyone cross the border recently and know the percentages charged on declared alcohol? I know there is a GST (Goods & Service) tax of roughly 5%, and a PST (Provincial Sales Tax) of 8%. Anyone know the duties associated with these taxes. Looking at a per case cost, with a declared value of $15.00. any help woul dbe greatly appreciated. I have been all over the net, and made multiple phone calls, time to consult the experts...

Sorry, can't help on this year, but last year we did the math and it's actually cheaper to buy at the duty free shop as you cross. This was at International Falls.

Each person of legal drinking age is allowed one case of beer OR 1 liter of liquor duty free. If you have more that 1 case per person figure about $9.00/case duty. The duty on liquor is higher than beer.

Not sure on the beer, but once a few years ago I purposely brought a case of been and 1 liter bottle of Captain Morgan. They asked me what I paid for the Captain I think I told them like $15. They said since it costs $30 in Canada, I owe duty of $15. So from what I gathered, they are basically making your pay their prices.

We typically bring a case each and buy a case of Canadian beer up there. It's like $40/case up there though. If it's really only $9/duty per case, I am better off bringing two cases from here.

Crossing in Baudette... First Canadian trip, so saying i'm a novice is being gentle... Is there a duty free shop across near the Baudette crossing?

What ever you bring up extra and pay duty on it saves you about 50-60% over LCB prices in Canada.Every year bring bring extra and pay duty. Customs has never searched me for anything as they think your honest declaring extra juice. Might be just luck ! Good luck on your trip!

Yes there is a duty free shop in Baudette. You go in amd make your purchase and then you drive to the bridge and pick up your purchase just before you cross. BTW if you drink Bud Light the stuff at the duty free is brewed in Canada by Labatts and has a different taste than US Bud Light. I don't care for it so I bring my beer from home and pay the duty. It's still cheaper than buying at the LCBO

Thanks for the info fellas,

I won't be up there to get "black out" drunk, but 1 case just won't cut it for a week.

You may want to call the customs and find out, but starting this year we are allowed all the beer we want.
Thanks

Fisher are you saying you can bring all the beer you want without paying duty on the beer in excess of a case? That was not the way it was when I crossed at IF back in June.

The no limit on beer and booze only applies to people who have a cabin on the US side of the Angle. Everyone else is restricted to one case of beer or 20 Ozs. of liquor.

It makes no difference if you buy it at the duty free or anywhere else you will still need to pay duty for anything in excess of that.

This is all new to me as we typically bring the alcohol we are alloted and purchase the remainder in Sioux Lookout or wherever. Is it a pain or a delay when crossing the border? Do you have to declare that you're picking up alcohol or is it already in your possession? This is a bit confusing. We are planning on 4 cases or so and a bottle of vodka. I figured we'd just purchase in Sioux Lookout, but from what I'm reading paying the duty is much much cheaper.

When we buy at the duty free it takes 5 to 10 minutes in the store depends on if there is a line. Picking it up at the bridge is a snap. Paying the duty rarely takes more then 10 minutes. Depends on how busy they are at customs. We've been bring our beer and booze up for years with no problems. If you smoke you can save a ton by buying smokes at the duty free store. Your allowed one carton

It appears we've been doing it wrong for years and spending way too much money. I'll give it a try later this month.

I like to bring a few cases of Labatts home after our trip. Been doing that for several years. Last year we were told by the US customs agent as we declared a couple cases each, that we were lucky he didn't confiscate our beer. Is there now a duty to pay in US for purchasing beer at duty free at the border coming home? Just want to do the right thing, but also want to bring home some Canadien beer to savor for remainder of year.

You are allowed one liter of beer or liquor or wine duty free when you come into the U.S. After that the duty is 15 cents per liter on beer. However, I would be surprised if they took the time & effort on just one case. NO Cuban cigars though

If I'm reading that correctly, that would be roughly $3.84 for 3 cases of beer at .15 per liter of beer(355 ml cans). That would not be so bad. Hopefully they can shed some more light at duty free.
