Location: Mauston, Wisconsin | In case you hadn't noticed, I may have to re-power my Skeeter - it all depends on cost & performance. I've heard some good stuff about new two strokes, any validity? 4 strokes seem a quite a bit heavier, so I assume there will be loss in performance - weight/HP issue. I don't want to sacrifice performance.
The vexing question is should I rebuild the old (1989) 150HP Johnson 2 stroke w/ blown rod or go new? 2 stroke or 4 stroke?

Location: In a shack in the woods | I just repowered this spring. The 4 strokes aren't that heavier than the 2. I really like that new 150 merc 4 stroke. It all comes down to what you will be doing. I went with a pro xs because I don't troll and would rather run faster than a 4. Both brands are good but the evinrude was $2500 more than what I found a mercury for. Also consider closeness of dealers and scheduled maintenance cost. In my case the merc is actually cheaper in maintenance too. |

Location: Cedarburg, Wisconsin | Don't waste the cash rebuilding it. It was a fine motor in its day but that's ancient history. The new E-TEC 2 strokes will purr like a kitten compared to the old Johnson while giving you probably around 30% greater fuel efficiency. No warm up, no stumbling on acceleration, just turn the key and fish. For 17 years I ran a '91 Fast Strike 150, a great motor that's still running strong, but my 2008 200HO E-TEC crushes it for fuel consumption frugality and when you start, there's no trademark cloud of smoke before the Hi Ho Silver and Away!
The only thing to watch is the HP rating. Back in the "good old days" they way under rated the motors to where my '91 was close to 20% more HP than decaled on the shroud. That changed and now "X" HP is "X" HP, or a HO version is up to 10% more max.
Lots of good motors out there now to choose from.

Location: Minnesota. | Just got a new Yamaha 150 4 st on a new boat. Replaced my older '97 115 2 stroke Yammy that gave me zero trouble in the 15 yrs I ran her. Zero!
Couldn't be happier. And, she "sipps" gas....Hope she holds up as good as my last Yamaha.
