Posts: 6 | Does anyone have any suggestions on what the hot lure/color is for this lake for the big muskie? Going to be out there on tuesday for the fist time of the season and what to start it off in the right direction. Any suggestions would be great!! Thanks Jawz

Posts: 114 | Yep, the northern portion of the season doesn't open in Wisconsin until Saturday, May 26. I wouldn't be casting for muskies on Bone before that.

I would go somewhere else. The abundant of spear fishing in the winter has turned the lake into a desert compared to what it was 15 years ago. Unless you like catching 32" on a rare occasion.

Posts: 6 | I heard that they were all speared out but was hoping it was not true. Its sad cause i fished that lake with my grandpa as a little kid. I was hooked on Muskie fishing from that point on seeing him catch all thoses huge muskies. you guys have any recommendations on other lakes around that area. I'm coming from Baldwin WI and don't mind driving an hour to at least have a shot at catching a couple. Thanks Jawz

Posts: 432 Location: Eagan, MN | It's been quite a few years since I've fished the area, but from Eau Claire up through Bloomer there are quite a few muskie waters. I think they would be roughly an hour or a little more from Bloomer. Lake Wissota and the small flowage directly downstream from it, Potato Lake, Clear/Island/McCann/Chain, even the Chip itself if your boat is small/light enough. Had pretty good luck, and not a lot of muskie pressure, at least back in the day.

Posts: 1141 Location: NorthCentral WI | I can't say I've ever fished it but the Musky Country Tournament Circuit will be on Bone Lake September 8th this year. I would expect a few muskies to be caught. It can't be that bad if they'd even put it on the schedule. But then again... Edited by MartinTD 5/16/2012 6:49 AM

Posts: 303 Location: WI | They'll catch muskies on the MCTC...no doubt. But, it's not what it used to be. There's only so many bodies of water in Polk Co that can hold a 30+ boat tourney...Bone being one of two/three.

Posts: 6 | Ok guys u won't believe this I went to bone lake fishing for bass. Had no intensions fishing for muskies didn't even bring Muskie rods, lures or my measuring stick, the only Muskie thing I brought was my net that i just bought 2 weeks ago cause I didnt own a net and everyone knows you need a net to go fishing. But back to my story I was using my 12lbs test bass rod using a small rapla crankin rap and hooked into a Muskie and after that had alot more follows. I'll try to post the pic. Thanks for the great info! Jawz

Guys, there are still plenty of muskies in Bone Lake. The spearing hurt the population, and that's a shame, but it was an above-average population density to begin with. It might not be the action lake that it was back in the mid/late '90's and early '00's, but it certainly isn't a "desert" by any means.

I actually thought the spearing and backing off of the stocking a bit helped the lake. Definitely bigger fish in there then than the mid-90's. Wish they would post the results of the GLIFWC/DNR survey they did for 2011/2012. That's really the only way to tell how bad it is.

Posts: 6 | Here's the picture. Don't know how long it is for sure, I'm thinking it was about 40" but didn't have the muskie measuring stick in the boat. Any ideas? Attachments ---------------- MuskieBoneLk.jpeg (122KB - 847 downloads)

Between Bone and Deer, those lakes were chucked full of musky! I do agree that the size and structure of the fish were better for awhile but after getting speared as hard as it did no lake could sustain a healthy population! The lakes are decimated and really not worth the time anymore. It is a #*^@ shame too because I loved to fish them and always put numerous fish in the boat a day and some pretty good ones too. I would love to see these lakes make a comeback but as long as they get speared to death it won't happen...

I 100% agree with Toro! You look at my log books over the last 15 years and it has gone way down. Me and my buddies would spend 1-2 weeks there a year and would boat 40 or more fish a week (32" or greater) . We would also have multiple nights (not days) where we would boat a half of dozen 40" + fish. Then the spear fishing started in the mid 2000's and you see a direct correlation in our logs. In a week we used to boat 40 or more fish it then dropped all the way down to 1-5 or none. Its not because we don't know what we are doing, we as a group have won numerous tournaments and have a collective experience of 130 years of musky fishing. Yes, the bad algae blooms over the last 6-8 years have been bad and probably effected it as well but spearing is a huge factor. Talk with the locals who live there and they seen 30 fish laying on the ice in a weekend, and this is done over a 4-6 week period. The 50" limit in effect will help but until the spearing stops the fishery will never recover properly.

Hey I have a cabin on Bone Lake in Rest Point Resort and I heard that Polk County had a vote and the spearing of Muskies on Bone Lake has been made illegal. I heard it was the first time that Native Americans have been declined this option. I have not been able to confirm this notion yet but has anybody else heard anything of this?

i have not heard this and unfortunately not sure it could ever happen. BUT if it did I would throw a party about it!

Posts: 32886 Location: Rhinelander, Wisconsin | The only authority that can successfully ban spearing or netting by the Tribes is the Federal Government.
