I was thinking about trying this out. Does anyone have advice. I wanted to use hog wobblers and globes.

wobblers may not work as well as you want because they're a slower bait that needs consistent speed but prop baits definitely work good with the planers

I tried the hughes river jitterbug style topwater behind one once and it performed well but did not catch anything when i tried it.

I have had some success with this tactic I would recommend 25 feet of line behind the planer board. I prefer to use 50lb big game mono a bit of strech helps with hook ups. My favorite topwater bait to troll is the lac suel turbo from American hardwood lures because the tail will always spin.

I tried a bit of trolling topwaters last year but had no success. Usually moving spot to spot I also put one out . I put out probably 50-70 feet of line behind the boat. Trolling tops seems very logical to me- wish it made as much sense to the fish.

Hasn't paid off for me yet, but it's cool to troll them over your weed icons while other lines are going over the breaks. I used Pacemakers & Headbangers.

I get about 3 to 5 fish a year trolling top water.  Really no need for planer boards, unless your boat can't go over what you want to troll.  I let out about 20ft of line for short line and about 45 to 50  ft. for the long line.  Key is to stagger the sounds of each surface lure to help not confuse the fish of bait location.

Great point jdsplasher. That was one reason I thought about using a planer board ( to get good space between baits.) One flaw that I can see being a issue with a planer board and top water is slack line. There is a lot of slack from the fish hitting the bait and the planer board breaking of..... I think this might lead to poor hook ups.

I've had some success trolling buzz baits with about 75 feet of line out and keeping them high up. This all started when in Canada it was hot and flat. Moving to the next spot and grabbing a sandwich. Have you guys ever seen the videos where the Great White shark smashes those sealls. Well thats what this looked like. Awesome strike he missed it but awesome nun the less. So I kept trying it screwing around with speed and weights. I eventually caught two that week doing the trolling buzzbait thing. It does work and is a good way to break up the day. But I don't see it as a high percentage move.
