Hey all,  the new to me resin molding process I tried on a creeper/top water worked out pretty good so I decided to start developing something I’ve had on the back burner using the same process.  It will be a diving bait used for casting or trolling.  I’ll want a floater, but I know a suspender weighted for kicking out will be requested too.  I’ve played with a few shapes and this is the one I’ll be tooling with.  I need to do a bit more testing of the lip angle before I go further.  In the attached pics there is one of the CAD design image and some others of CNC cut wood prototypes.

Looks good mike. I would not mind seeing a super bouyant one with a big wide near vertical lip too. The "kid" wouldn't like it but i would!

Hey thanks all!

Stan, a "chrome lift" by you is definitely in this baits future.  Also, I’ve been meaning to drop you a line on how your custom chrome perch pattern  on the Molly Bait was our trips “hot bait” a couple of weeks ago.  I love that pattern!

Todd, once the lip shape and angle are finalized those details will be put in the mold.  This allows me to insert the lip and the through wire form assembly in the mold before pouring the resin.  That way the lip is perfectly positioned every time.  And yes, the angle will be more towards the “Kids” liking.  He already has me talked into getting the second bait out of the mold.  That being said, I can make you a custom per your request down the road, I’d like one of those too.

Here it is painted up.  She’s passed her swimming pool tests and is dancing like she should.  Fishing tests later this week.

Ohhh my! That looks great - I want! If it swims as well as it look's, its got to be killer. So, the next logical ?'s. When are you taking orders, etc?

Have fun!

Thanks Al!  I still have a bit of work to do.  I still need to make the mold, I then plan to get a small batch made up and into the hands of some guys who have been helpful with feedback over the years.  They’ll help me make any final tweaks that will ensure that they do swim as good as they look.  After that I’ll make some up for it’s debut at the Milwaukee musky expo next year.

Guest - 7/6/2012 11:09 AM How is it significantly different from the DDD?

Well, I guess I’d say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree as my designing style can only vary so much.  I wanted to do another diver.  Yes the bait incorporates influences from my past design experiences.  But there are many differences between the two baits.  Whether they are “significantly different” is a subjective opinion, I don’t see much drama happening over it.  The Molly diver is over a half inch longer, is much taller with a drop belly or shad profile.  There is more curvature to the back and it’s a little narrower.  If you were to look at a cross section it is much more of an elliptical shape than the round ddd.  The proto has much more belly roll and flash, but maintains the lip angle and shapes it needs for the wiggle and kick out. The ddd is an injection molded thermoplastic, the Molly diver will be a hand mixed and hand poured thermoset resin.  The ddd has a custom injection molded lip; this one uses a standard off the shelf polycarbonate lip.   The ddd uses figure 8 hook hangers, the Molly diver will have a true through wire construction.  An advantage of insert molding a though wire is the ability to place weights on the wire form according to the bait style you are making.  I can set them up to be a suspending bait with a lot of kickout, a bait weighted for speed trolling, or a floater that will back out of the weeds.  The ddd has no internal weighting.  I tried an internal weighted wire harness on the HH but the injection pressures blew them out of position.  The hand poured process does not have this problem.  The downside is that they’re slow to make, you’re not going to see these in any big box stores or many dealers for that matter.

Mike,

Great response explaining the difference between the Molly Diver and the DDD.  Gotta say, the proto looks FANTASTIC.

Glad to see your passion for lure crafting continue.

When you are ready for opinions, you know I always have one.
