I seem to have terrible luck when the moon is up. I practically dread the new moon weekend. I didn't raise a single fish this weekend in about 17 hours of fishing with 2 guys in the boat. The moon being up doesn't seem to bother other people the way it affects me. I fish whenever I can, and fish just as hard when the moon is up. Don't feel like I do anything different. I fish a lot of sharper breaking structure, or suspended fish that are loosely related to structure of some sort. When nothing's working I fish weed flats, weedlines, breaklines, and out in the basin.

Sometimes I wonder if I lack confidence when the moon is up and experiment too much, not giving one thing enough chance to work.

How does everyone feel about fishing with the moon up? Tough fishing, doesn't make a difference, etc? Do you do anything different with the moon up vs. being down?

Moon up and I lose A LOT of confidence on the water if there is no positive weather to outweigh the moon phase.

I have learned to stick with what has worked and cover water until you get a window. Often times I think you can get too creative and be in the wrong location during a short window.

Any time you can get on the water is learning experience. Use this time to locate fish, try new lures, etc. Then target the fish you see at moonrise or moonset.

Moon up really only sucks for me at night.

New moon is one of my favorite times.

have had great nights/big fish with it up at night and down...have seen some full moon nights with it bright where they bit great and other nights shut down...i would prefer moon down at night but don't think they won't bite w it up and bright...they do... big ones.

I'd like to fish at night more than I do but it's hard for me to work into my schedule. When the moon is up during the day I don't usually have the option to wait to fish moon down at night.

Travis, it's interesting that you prefer moon up. Any reason for it other than you catch more fish with it up than down? Does anybody fish any differently with the moon up vs down? I'm guessing it would be the best to "just fish," doing things that have been working before, and wait for a window to open. Sometimes when no fish are biting or showing up it seems like the definition of insanity to keep doing the same thing and expecting a different result, but I guess insanity can't predict windows either.

Sometimes I laugh when I read articles that tell you to keep experimenting until the fish that you see following start to bite. What happens when you go 10 hours without a follow? No follows seems to be compounded by tending to fish deeper water where fish just eat rather than follow most of the time.

Tucker I think you took my post incorrectly. I didn't say I prefer moon up. Just that it really sucks for me at night with it up. If I had my druthers I would take moon down during the day as well. However at some point you have to fish with it up so I would rather it be during the morning/early day portion. That way it sets in advance of nightfall, and I can fish on a dark night the whole time especially on a full moon.

As Nelson says you will catch fish both ways. I just prefer down.

I got 'ya now Travis. Almost all of my fishing is done between the hours of early morning into the first hour or two of dark at night. The new moon weekend can be brutal for me during the day. I have caught fish with the moon up all day but not many. I would have to say the majority of my really rotten days come when the moon is up all day.

Still think I need to re-evaluate my strategy. Could probably extend it to any time the fish just aren't going. May be prone to over think and over experiment...

I have no problems with the new moon phase. I usually plan my LOTW trip with a new moon somewhere towards the last few days of the trip. Moon set from the middle of the day on gives me something to look forward to when the weather is hot and flat.

I love the new moon phase, I just don't like to fish it when the moon is up. I will still fish the new moon when it is down if at all possible.
