Just received a couple 300Ds in the mail, the new design is very neat. It is very compact and seems really sturdy, really comfortable to palm and still has good line capacity. The look nice as well. BR

Got a 400D today. Put it on A Big Dawg I just received, balanced the outfit, and will be throwing at the Oneida County Muskies tomorrow. The outfit feels great....

So since they are supposed to be a size bigger power wise, would a 300 technically be a 400?? Like I could use the 300 for everything except mag dawgs, pounders and DCG 10's and up??

I am sure it will handle pretty much all baits fine, they are just very compact so the spools are narrow. The narrow spool allows for higher line capacity for the reel size, but probably makes longer casts with higher lb line less effective. At this point the 400D is so small there is almost no need for the 300. I have a couple 300's because I got a super great price and really do not throw the larger baits out west. If I was paying full price, I would have gotten the 400, it is easy to palm and a can do it all. BR

On the TE reels the 300 and 400 had the same gear of 5.1:1 and had a 25" line pickup. The New 300D has a 5.6:1 gears and a 30" of line pickup and the 400D has a 5.1:1 and a 27" line pickup. The spools may be narrow but they are taller then the TE spools.

I think I am going to use 65lb on the 300D, I prefer 80, but I do think it will perform better with the lighter line. BR

65lb on the 300D and 80lb on the 400D would be the way to go. I don't like the Dis Engaging levelwind system, but with the new spools being narrow, that will help.

I think I'm going to wait this one out. Lord knows I'm a sucker for new toys, I just think I'm THAT happy with my curado on my jerk rod and my calcuttas on the other two rods I mostly use. The hype tranx had got me stirred up, until I saw it in person. Wayyyyy to big for my liking. The curado is perfect for me with wtd lures. I think a full day of gliders with a calcutta would be hard on me.

Palming the 300D is very uncomfortable for me, the engage lever pokes me in the palm of my hand. Compared to the old style TEs where they offset the engage lever to the right. It's the combination of a narrow spool and no room for the offset. Just might be the size of my hnads, not sure.

If you have smaller hands I could how that would be perhaps an issue. I have larger hands, but think even smaller hands should be okay. When I palm the reel, the meat of my palm and also thumb are pretty far behind the button. BR

How are they holding up to various baits?

I took it out to throw baits the other day. I threw double 8's, 9 inch grannies, weagle, mag dog, suicks, pretty much everything I throw. The reel is pretty amazing, the smoothness is something else, actually hard to explain. Extremely fluid perhaps. It took the full 150 yard spool of 65lb PP slick 8 to fill it up. That is 25 yards more than spec suggests. Really amazed by the feel of the reel. BR

For those that have used the new 300 or 400d reels, which would be recommended just for double-10s. Meaning easy to retrieve for extended periods and have decent line pickup. Pretty accustomed to the Revo Toro Winch (like it but we all know it only brings in 22-23" per crank)

Initially I had planned on selling them as they are just so compact, but they grew on me and pretty much do everything I need them to do. If I end up needing something to throw pounders/big blades exclusively the 400D would be my next purchase. Have to start saving pennies. BR

Would the 300 or 400 be as close to the perfect all around muskie reel (if there is such a thing) from bucktails to 10's, cranks and gliders? And how does it compare to the older TE?
