On an outing this week Ross's Sport Shop guide John Kleczewski and his 2 clients came across a Loon that seemed to be in trouble. After getting a closer look the fishermen saw that the loon was tangled in a mess of line that some careless person threw overboard into Elk Lake. John contacted the DNR Hotline and a warden gave him permission to capture the Loon and untangle it. So John and his clients used the trolling motor to get close to the loon, they netted it with a large landing net and brought her into the boat. The fishing line was wrapped around the loons neck, beak, feet and body. John had client Dean Somerfelt hold the loon down in the boat being careful not to hurt it while John started cutting and untangling the line from the loon. Everything went well and they released the loon back into the water and she let out a loon cry immediately as to say thank you to the 3 fishermen for helping her out.

Just another reason to support a small town quality sporting goods store.

That's a great job. Just have to wonder how many loons get caught in line inderwater which may have been broken off in a snag and never make it back to the surface again. That loon is very fortunate that John and his clients gave of their hearts to help. Thanks guys!

Cool story, loons are neat birds to watch. I have rescued a few ducks on the Fox River that get tangled up in garbage and line. My family has been grabbing line that we find on the shore or in the water and over the years we have collected almost a large garbage bag full. I can't believe how ignorant some people are to just throw 50 yards of line into the water. I get really peeed when it trips me up while wading.

It kind of irks me that you need to call the authorities to ask for permission to do the right thing.

Well done gents.

Cool story, any kind of littering on the water is horrible, but fishing line is some of the worst. It seems like a couple times a year I'm untangling it out of one of my props.

Really a cool story! Nice job indeed.

I just can't fathom why such stupidity happens to a resource that we all share and enjoy so much.

Makes a guy feel really good that you cared so much and helped that bird out. A great story!!!!
