I just recently bought a hardhead and based off the posts I have read on this site it seems like fish really like to head hunt this bait. When I use bulldawgs I use 150# fluorocarbon leaders, should I be using heavier fluorocarbon or should I just go to wire strand leaders? For those that use the hardheads what do you use?

I use Hardheads a lot and have always used them with 150# Seaguar leaders that I make. No problems for me yet.

I use solid wire most of the time, but that is because that is what I use on all my rigs because it is cheap and I make them myself. I have used some Flouro leaders, and maybe it's just coincidence but it sure seems like I catch more fish when the wire leaders are on. Perhaps just thinking too much, but I know others whom have seen similar results.

For me a solid leader hangs up much less when I jerk, then pause to let the hardhead drop. When I do the same with the flouro the front hook likes to catch the flouro a lot.

Use what you normally use for leaders, but if you start hanginging up with the flouro think about using a solid leader with no other hardware except a split ring to attach the bait to.

You should be OK as most of the time they hit about where the front hook is. On the small ones you could have an issue with them taking in the whole thing depending on how you work them. If you work them with harder and longer pulls and drop the rod back to fast they have a little more glide and can catch up to the leader if it is floro or 49 strand, not so much for solid wire.

Just caught my first hardhead musky a 40 inch musky in figure eight today while letting bait wobble in his face. Awesome. Also first musky of season for me. One of the most violent strikes I've seen in longtime. Headhunted the bait all right. I used floro leader and got hung up few times but not to much. Just when I think I have all I need, I find a new favorite bait and still learning all the things u can do with these hardheads and the weights.

Thanks for the replies guys, I wasn't really worried about getting hung up with the leader. I figured with them hitting it so hard and head hunting it that maybe people were getting bit off with 150# fluorocarbon.

you know, this is funny... but i have been catching more fish with a single strand wire than i have with Flouro leaders. i thought i was going crazy, but if i look back over the years wire has done way better for me.
