This week I will be giving a buddy a crash course in musky fishing; he will be fishing a tournament with me in the future but has no experience with muskies. He is a hardcore walleye fisherman so he is definitely capable of learning the trade. Any advice for teaching the do's and don't's of muskie fishing?

I personally have no experience guiding, But something that helped me when I went out with a guide. I asked him to make about ten casts as if he were really trying to trigger a fish, then I just watched and tried to do the same thing everytime I casted. I'm not sure if it will help your buddy, but it helped me. Just have him watch you for 5 minutes and try and miminc what you do. Then he will be able to pick the other stuff up and throw his own twist into things. just a though.

Perhaps the basics are important... 1. Teach him how to ridicule pictures of muskie on the internet. 2. Teach him to belittle an angler that keeps a muskie. 3. Teach him to hate other groups such as Dark House Spears. I think if you can instill those 3 ideas, the rest will come naturally. BR

Since Walleye guys like to EAT everything they catch and then blame the muskies for the lack of walleyes,... perhaps you might clue him in on Catch and Release,...... Oh ,.... And what BenR said.

A kind of reverse engineering if you will. I like that.

If you tell him over and over that he will probably not catch one, he probably will! I like taking newbies out cause they are always good luck!

No side arm casting! Make sure to put all the pictures and info on every website and Face Book.

Haha this is too funny... My theory is the moment you can begin to just enjoy throwing baits and trying to figure out what the fish are doing, you have become a musky angler. Dont focus on fish in the boat, but rather time on the water. Also, instill the sense of masichism that accompanies most serious musky anglers which will perpetuate the lack of regard for your rib cage, back, arms, legs and the rest of your body. If you arent sore, your not doing it right. lol. Good Luck! By the way, what tournament are you planning to fish?

First off, you have to teach him how to cast. Then you have to teach him how to work specific lures. I'd start with a bucktail and make sure that he does a proper 8 every time for the entire week. It needs to become muscle memory.

As he advances, work with him to identify the structure you are throwing, almost like seeing the topo map while fishing, that way he can pick apart open spots of water and really help the boat out.

Hope it works out for you!

Keep everything for him as simple as possible.

1. Casting
2. figure 8s
3. netting (no flipping the muskies into the boat! head first into the net...)
4. setting the hook (step into the hookset)

I would also stick to straight retrieve type lures, at least at first.

Remind him of the actual number of casts it takes to land a 50"+ fish.....JUST ONE!!

Something I used to tell my two sons. They caught on after awhile - now dad's got little credibility!!

Keep the humor/jabber up in the boat. It can get a bit tedious w/o seeing fish.

Good luck.

Jeremy.

Seeing as he will be fishing in tournaments with you……a couple important tips I would mention are, walk the fish around the boat after its hooked. Talk about how to take the fight to the fish and not allow the fish to charge in then pause boat side and head shake. The second thing I would mention is when the fish makes a run away from the boat (directly away from you) never try and lift the fish with your rod and pull it back, but rather burry the rod tip in the water and pull the fish over to one side. I would see lots of people lose a lot of fish because of these two mistakes.

REALLY good advice along with the other stuff that's already been said. Little tough to say it runs true for ALL topwaters though....lot of variety in baits out there.

BR

You stay classy Ben.

Thanks for the help. My buddy seemed to catch on much faster then I would have guessed. Took about a half hour until he would do a proper 8 but other then that I was impressed with his determination. A major thing that I learned fishing with him; walleye fishermen sure know how to troll for muskies. I was impressed with his boat control and tactics.
