A buddy and myself got permission from our wives to go on a long muskie fishing weekend from Sept.28 to Oct.1. Now we'er looking for ideas on the best place to go. We are both from Plymouth WI. and want to stay in WI. We both have trolled the Bay and fished the 2 muskie lakes in our backyards (he's more a walleye and salmon guy) and that's about it for lakes that we have fished. Not looking to get a guide want to figure it out on our own. We want an adventure and learn some new water. Looking for a good action lake don't care if we go north or south just want to catch fish and have some fun!! Any recommendations, tips, and, thoughts would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

I have been going to North Twin Lodge (www.northtwinlodge.com) for nearly 20 years. North Twin Lake has 3400 acres, NE of Eagle River; plenty of variety and numbers of places to fish so that you won't get bored by a lack of hotspots; Great clean lodging, great wind protected slips for your boat; There are always places to fish no mater which way the weather comes from; city services such as sport shops, grocery stores, restaurants all are within minutes, travel time from your home is minimal. It has an excellent multi-species fishery besides muskies. Historically, it has an very responsive topwater bite.

i'd suggest you pick a place on a chain ...

minocqua chain
sugar camp chain
eagle river chain
manitowish chain

that time of year its a bit more relaxed in the northwoods so you'll have a great time and the chains will give you variety and a place to stop and have lunch or take a break on the water. you can leave the boat in the water for convenience. lots of options and choices for lodging ...

North Twin has it days, both good and bad, just like any other lake.
There are plenty of other options close by if they would desire a road trip.

I second the notion for a Vilas County Trip. Stay where ever you like, within 30 minutes of your place you will have dozens of good muskie lakes to fish.

My experience on Twin has been different than Steve's. I wouldn't stay on that lake as it can become unfishable quickly with the wind. There aren't too many spots to go to tuck out of the wind on that lake. That isn't to say that I wouldn't fish it, but the wind has to do it's part.

If you want action lakes close to Twin, Boot is good. Ballard/Irving are good. Palmer is good. ER chain is 20 minutes away...etc. There really are too many to try to list.

Clam Lake area has the highest muskie to person ratio on the planet. A lot of action lakes surrounded by national forest. Quiet lakes as mentioned above are 20 minutes away, Chip is half hour away, Namekagon is 15 minutes.

I have been fishing North Twin for 15 years. It can be good but it is definitely not an action lake... As for chains, the eagle river chain is a good bet for late sept and early october for both action and some good size structure (a good number of 35" to 42" fish with the occassioal mid 40". Manitowish and Minocqua are great bodies of water but are a bit tougher to fish, however, they have some larger fish. Havent fished Sugar Camp Chain but I ahve heard it is decent. Good luck.

We've decided to go to Teal/Lost Land/Ghost/Moose Lakes.
If anyone has any info that there will to share like lure types, colors, spots...anything will help us get started. We'll be up there Sept 28 through Oct.1. I did buy a sportsman's connection muskie book that has 3 of the 4 lake maps in it so I've been looking at that alot. Like I said any info would be great!
Thanks

Moose is the best action lake bucktails and top waters work well

I thought you wanted to figure it out yourself and now you want advice?

Just giving you grief. Both lakes have great numbers, but not a lot of real big fish. There are plenty in the low to mid 40's though.

In my experience you will have action there that time of year. Make sure you drag suckers, but depending on the weather, it can be tough to get suckers in the area as the shipments come in and are gone in less than an hour at times. (At least that was my experience) but I do know that trapping suckers was tough when I was there which could have led to less inventory at the local bait shops.

I actually prefer lost land to teal as I had more luck there, but both are good lakes. We had most of our success on smaller bucktails, phantoms, and suicks in addition to suckers. Orange was also a very good color for us as was brown/yellow.

Good luck!

Just make sure you don't forget your rods or tackle boxes or it will be the last long weekend you will ever get to have!

This coming from experience.

the central part of the state offer great oppertunitys, many flowages to choose from and many other stretches of the river that are really productive. most cities have a wide range of lodging from camping to hotels. ha seen you choose already
