Hey everyone, looking for some help on seeing how the St. Croix Big Nasty fits in compared to the Predator line. How would you say it performs power/action wise to the Predator Heavy, Predator Heavy with 2" trimmed, and Predator XH?

Thanks!

The XH Predator has a lot more power that the Big Nasty Blank. I was planning on having Thorne Bros. make me a rod last winter using the heavy Pred. blank and after talking it over with Luke Ronstrand I had them make a rod with the Big Nasty blank. He said that if I go with the heavy Pred. blank, have 2 or 3 inches taken off the tip. The rod they built is really nice. 9'8" with a 18" handle. I like the Symcork over regular cork. The rod works great with Dbl 10's, twitch baits and mag dawgs. Last weekend I threw a pounder and it felt a little light for that.
Either way you will be happy!

Nasy feels somewhere between a H and XH in the Predator. Faster than the Heavy Predator.

Nice thing with a custom Predator rod is that you can have it built with the "trimmings" the way you want...

Jeremy with Tuscadora has these blanks and you can see what he can do. Click on a few of the pictures on his rod page and you will soon see that "options" are no problem.

Towards the bottom is a custom rod he did on a Predator blank (green).

PS-Tuscadora also carries the St Croix blanks too.

that green predator he did is the one he built for me, its awesome, alot beefier as was mentioned above than the nasty. I have both of these rods and the XH predator can handle bigger baits. IMO, and depending on what you plan to throw the most, the XH predator is a bit more versatile but both rods are excellent

Let me give some more background here -for i already have two predators, a 9'6 XH with a PG tranx for plastics and big stuff, and 9'6 heavy with a HG tranx for bucktails. I want to get a rod for an overall midsize lure set up with a 400te. 10" jakes, shallow invaders, larger topwater, and bucktails (for slow rollong at night). Im debating between a heavy predator trimmed or a big nasty. I like the handle length on the splot nasty and I could easily get one by opener.

the nasty sounds like it would work for you then, the trimming of the tip on a pred would be nice though for those 10" jakes but the nasty should be able to handle that stuff just fine.

I have a custom built big nasty 9' 6" H, custom predator 9' 6" XH and a custom predator 9' H. The big nasty falls right between the two actions but i would say it's closer to the XH predator than it is to the H predator. I would also say it feels a touch heavier than the predator blank? I use my big nasty for all blades (small to large) but this rod can do almost anything.

I've had the opportunity to use the H less 2" Predator in 9' and IMO it is a great rod for all of the stuff you listed. I plan to build one next off season. I haven't handled the Big Nasty so I cannot comment on it. If you are planning to build custom, then go to a custom shop, like Thorne, and handle the blanks to get a feel for them. (In the case of the trimmed Predator I know they have been building quite a few of those lately so you should be able to handle one.) That is the best way to be sure you are making the right choice for you.
