Dave and Larry, I’ve noticed an abundance of bullheads on the chip this year and have heard talk of a minnow kill this past spring. What does all this mean and how will it affect the fishing future?

nxtwrldrcd,

There are immense schools of small (2") bullheads nearly everywhere on the Chip. I, for one, am glad to see them. Bullheads are one of the muskies favorite foods, at least on the Chip. They just make for healthier, fatter muskies.

As to the fish kill this spring, I also heard rumors about it. But I did not see any major fish kill. I talked to one of the older guides, Joe Jasek, and Joe spent a lot of time on the Chip just looking around in late April and early May. Joe said he didn't see any dead game fish, and few dead minnows.

When the water in the Chip is lowered in the late fall, a few fish always get trapped. But I don't think it was a major thing last spring.

Good Fishing,
Dave Dorazio

Dave's post pretty much covers it. Only thing (somewhat unrelated) that I can add is that muskies LOVE bullheads wherever they are!

Muskie regards,
Larry
