Subject: Evinrude 25hp Motor

I have a 1996 Evinrude 25hp motor that I bought that has been sitting in a garage for 3 years. I haven't had it in the water yet but I hooked up a pair of ear muffs and started it up to see how it runs. It purs like a charm and the gears work fine. the only thing I can't get it to do is get the motor to pee. Does anyone have any suggestions on what it could be?

Try poking a wire down the tube and see if it's plugged, then check to see if the motor is cooling. May need a new impeller.

Hiya,

That particular motor might not have a little pee hole to it... If memory serves me correctly, there is an outlet hole (two of them actually) on the upper portion of the lower unit just below the main cowling. Water will spray out there (or more like "spit") all over the place. On the picture below you will see a little rectangular protrusion....that is where water will come out...

Right off, I don't recall my old 89 johnson 25 having a pee hole..... It's been a few years since I have had that motor...

rear left as you look at it from inside the boat?

And yes...stick a paper clip up the hole which may clear the blockage.

I would say the impeller change is good preventative maintenance at the outset. Never hurts to change it out.

also check to see the inlet screens are not plugged. Remove them and clean. I have had sand sucked in mine before which would then possibly make its way up to the aforementioned pee hole if small enough.

Pee hole is rear left as you look at it from inside the boat. Impeller is rubber and does wear out. You have to drop the lower unit to replace it. A bad impeller will make it trickle or stream slow or dribble at idle. It does sound like it may be clogged. Try the paper clip in the pee hole, ON THE MOTOR!

I agree...the other one would hurt...

While the muffs are on, give it some throttle. See if it pees at higher RPM.

I had an 83 or '85 Evinrude 25hp. It sputtered and spattered and ran super hot at idle, especially if you tried to troll with it. Walleye speeds, that is. But on plane or at 5-10mph even, it was fine, peed like a race horse.

Seems like it should get SOME dribble to come out, even if the impeller is shot. Unless its literally rotted out and the fins have fallen off or something.
