Holly Cow I bought a new Revo and havn't even made it to a lake yet and having problems. The second time I went out to the pond yesterday to try it out the reel would not re-engage. After looking into it the spring which activates the return keeps jumping out of its retaining position. Will call Garcia tomorrow! Anyone else having this problem? Thanks LArry

Posts: 1243 Location: Musky Tackle Online, MN | That spring may have been put in backwards. If one side of the spring is longer than the other, put it back in the other way and see if this fixes the problem. I know of a few new Revo Toros that had this problem right away and that was the fix. Worth a shot. If that doesn't work I'm sure Abu will take care of you. Aaron

Posts: 1360 Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | Larry Arndt - 3/11/2012 7:40 PM Holly Cow I bought a new Revo and havn't even made it to a lake yet and having problems. The second time I went out to the pond yesterday to try it out the reel would not re-engage. After looking into it the spring which activates the return keeps jumping out of its retaining position. Will call Garcia tomorrow! Anyone else having this problem? Thanks LArry ---------------------------------------------------------------- Hey Larry. I own The Revo Toro 61 5.4:1 as well as the winch. This did happen to me a few time while on the water and I believe that I can shed a little light on what is happening to you. First little bit of info bout the reel. There are some minor issues with this reel that I have noticed. First, If you favor one side or the other when trying to cast your lure (for example the right side) eventually you will get some un-even wear on the thumb bar. The backing of the thumb bar is made of graphite, light but it does where, you will start to notice that one side of the thumb bar is going to sit un-evenly (lower then the other side) . This is going to add extra problems when trying to cast larger baits. Also it makes it get a little dirty on the under side of the thumb bar from the wearing graphite. There are way to avoid this.... will explain... If I am correct what is happening to you is that you press the thumb bar and then you go to turn the reel and nothing happens, the handle just spins and spins with no results and the reel will not re-engage. In my experience this happens from to much pressure on the spool... Or not feeling for the reel to fully open before trying to close it and reel continuely. First, I thought the first time it happened to that I just bought this top of the line reel for it to break on me within three casts. There was to much pressure on the spool when I pressed the Thumb bar down. If there is to much pressue the graphite will sieze and its not that the reel wont re-engage, it is that it is not fully open in the first place. Try holding onto the handle and at the same time press down in the MIDDLE of the thumb bar to fully engage the reel. If you try on one side of the other it will not work as well (may still work, but takes a few times) once the reel is fully open, turn the crank and you should be set. Unfortenatly it took me over an hour on the water right after I moved a fish and that happened. Needless to say.. no fish that day. Whatever you do don't press to hard or it could break the graphite and the thumb bar will be completely broken and you will have to send it into ABU like I did with the winch... Don't make my mistake. Prevention in for the future (at least what works for me) Two things. First, Make sure that there is no pressue on the spool when you go to cast any lure. Place the lure in the water to relieve the pressue on the spool before pressing the thumb bar. Or give you rod a slight flick upwards and at the same time press the thumb bar and release it. If you do not do this, within one year, you may get grinding sounds internally withing the reel. Can be fixed with a simple cleaning. But it is always better to avoid any wear or grinding in the long run. The reel, for me anyway, is a beautiful, powerful piece of equipment. However it does take a lot of finess once you really figure it out. From what I am thinking, you probably have not even had it in the water yet. If this is the case. Hold down on the inner spool part and try what I said above. Again if this does not work. Take just a tad bit of Reel oil and place A TINY drop on either side of the thumb bar and press slightly in the middle while you try to reel at the same time. These are all of the things that work for me. It has happened to me probably a total of 20 times. But I can now fix the issue within 1 minute.. after the horrible first time experience with it. If none of what I have said works for you, I would at that point send it in to ABU and ask for a replacement. My Buddy did that and they sent him a new one. They Have great customer service and I have never had any issues and nor have any of my friends who have also delt with them. The spring can cause this as well, but if you know a guy that is good with reels or you yourself are, it should be a very inexpensive fix with the spring. That is if you do not want to wait for ABU to send it back. Also make sure that the spring is the correct size. Kind of like the Saltist there are some minor spring issues but can be fixed if you know your way around a reel. I keep a few ABU springs on the boat just in case. These should not be issues to stear you away from the reel. These two reels are my favorite HANDS DOWN!!! I would not sell them... well maybe for a tranx... but other then that I would not. Great reals and I will be picking up a third at the MN Musky expo this year. If you have any more questions you can PM me if you would like otherwise I will see it on this forum, let me know how things turn out and if anything was able to work for you. Thanks

Posts: 1743 Location: Mt. Zion, IL | Grease the side pads for the thumb bar on the inside and between the thumb bar and the plates. That should solve most issues. Even my new Revo Toro's get broken down to replace the grease. Abu uses cheap lubricants. Lubriplate is a high quality grease that won't break the bank. I have 7 Revo Toro's and I have never had the problem you describe AFTER re-lubricating the reels. They would hang up when new. A little grease goes a long way and makes a huge difference.

Posts: 339 Location: Denmark | I have a small reel repair shop, and in 99% of the cases where the Toros do not engage, it's a kick lever problem. If you give me the number under the reel foot, I can be more specific. But the small spring (the one AWH mention) could be damaged of reversed, if you post a photo we can check it out for you. Otherwise send the reel to Pikemaster, he can help you.

yes i had the exact same problem. You will have to send it out to one of their preffered reel repair shops . if you just put the spring back in , it will come out again. I have no confidence that this reel will last even though mine is working again. Imagine getting the fish of a lifetime and you can't reel it in ! I also know 1 other person who had the same thing happen. This is what happens now that they aren't made in sweden anymore ![]()
