Going to be fishing there for the first time during the opener. Just curious to know what types of baits work best or if theres areas to avoid. I have a hot spots map, but any additional info would help I'm sure. Any help would be appreciated, thanks! Also, thinking about getting some suckers, does anyone else use them for the opener down there?

I know its probably going to be packed down there as well, is there a better boat launch to use over another?

Depending on how early you get out, Smokeys Musky Shop is a good launch, but will likely get filled up early (it's a public launch, but not a ton of parking). The west end launch has plenty of room, and you're in a good spot to fish right as you launch (same goes for Smokeys).

As far as baits, smaller minnow baits will get you action for sure, and gliders will get some bigger fish moving, and some action as well. Other then that, I can't say there's a bait that won't catch fish on the opener as every year there's fish caught on bucktails, minnow baits, topwater, etc.

Get there early is the first piece of advice. Both lots can fill up pretty quick on opening day. I've got to agree with Tuffdaddy regarding baits.

You can never go wrong with suckers when the water temps are right. Early in the season or late, it's sucker time. Just make sure you're using a quickstrike rig. Go to Smokey's and get suckers, park and launch. Find some green weeds and start fishing.

Use the west end launch. Lake will be crowded.
Never tried suckers early there but they lovem in the fall.
Try white and nickle showgirls or white giant killers for bucktails if fish are active.
Crankbaits to try Diesel's and DB6's have done well for us.
Jerkbaits Phantoms or 7" suicks, i like perch patterns
have not done well on top water early season here but have heard of others who do ok.
good luck

I put my vote in for a golden shiner or walleye color slammer. Pick one up at Smokeys

6 or 7 inch Golden Shiner Slammers. Twitch 'em all day long, and you'll get fish.

Thanks everyone for the info. But now theres a change of plans. Didn't know there was an outing there on opening weekend and don't want to deal with even more people than would be there originially. Thinking about going to okauchee instead...is that clearer than pewaukee and will the same type of baits work? Any info would be appreciated...again, thanks!

Okauchee is much clearer. I've had better luck with silver and whites. Thats not to say I don't throw a Firetiger bucktail often.

you better plan on getting to the launch at okauchee super super early if you want to launch and park there. only 15 spots or so. you could always launch at weisgerber's i suppose and pay about $15. that lake will be a zoo also.

I certainly don't miss getting to the launch at Okauchee around 230am and being the second to the last spot open for the truck.

All Lake Country Lakes will be a zoo. If you want less of a crowd, try Fowler or Labelle.

That "tournament" on Pewaukee is just a Muskies Inc. Challenge between chapters. I'm not sure exactly how many guys are signed up, but I don't think it will be more than 10-15 boats or so between the two chapters. Could be wrong about that, but I don't think it is going to a 50-75 boat kind of tournament.

The outing is just a MI Chapter border battle. Doesn't really affect it much. Pewaukee is a big lake, and there are many areas that hold fish. I've always gotten a fish or two in the past on opening weekend. Of course, I had an secret weapon that one year. Chum!

Muskie league will run on wednesdays again this year, but we will be running it out of Smokey's. Lot easier on me! Johns guys will take care of everything plus $5 dollar parking and cheaper beers! I will be in Canada to much to control everything and it will just be here every week no switching to other lakes. We have had the best turn out and most action here as well. It will still be $10 a person but it will be total inches PER PERSON not per boat. So you can fish 1,2,3,4 per boat if you would like! Anything else just P.M. me Thanks Mike
Starts the 9th of may and fishing times are 5-9 if anyone is interested!!

I would launch EARLY at Smokeys. They have suckers and can get you going in the right direction. The water was is in the mid to upper 50's depending where you where on the lake on Tuesday and the next couple of days it should be warming so things should be good for Saturday.
As far as baits - smaller twich baits, I like the 6" Gloden Shiner Slammer!

I'm so glad that I don't have to fish on weekends. I'll be out there mid-week if the Dr. clears me. If he doesn't, it'll be mid-week next week. I don't do weekends.
