I'm sure someone will have a more technical anwser for you, but I throw topwater baits from season open to season close depending on current weather conditions. So I guess I don't think about the water temp with top water lures.

Like I said there is so much experience on this site with so many different opinions, that I am sure someone will give you a more technnical anwser, along with multiple different opinions.

Walk the Dog style topwater and slow moving baits like the Creeper are very effective from the Opener thru spring and summer.

I start on the opener and throw Pacemakers and Lee's Chopper. Sometimes a weagle if I raised fish in the area.

i heard once that if you are seeing turtles up on logs in the shallows while fishing, its a good time to throw a topwater. i tried it this year for those bass fish, water temp 54, and ended up catching a mess of them on a popper.

If your surface baits don't bounce on the ice then it's a good time to throw topwater.

Anytime the water temp is warming, is a good time to throw them in the spring. I generally start with Weagles, but prop baits work very well too.

I have caught them on topwater from the opener on, and never hesitate to toss them.

Right from the opener topwaters work well, and are actually better producers than the other baits. I have had good luck with the Fish Stick HD and Recon up until water temps are 70°+. After that the other topwaters seem to produce better. I actually like WTD topwaters during early season, post cold front days. You know the cold/cool bluebird days.

Early season is one of your best chances at catching suspended muskies on topwater! Again until water temps reach 70°.

whenever you feel the fish are in 10 feet or less is the most productive time or place, but not only then. fish will be in that 10' or less extremly early in the season almost anywhere muskies are but not so much in the fall depending on lake type and forage.

I love throwing top water when the water reaches the the high sixties or low seventies.

An older gentlemen in 80's told me, "When there are ducklings swimming around and dragonflies are are flying around, it's the prim etime to throw topwater." He has fished Muskies all his life.

I have taken his words to heart, making that time frame the best time of the year for me. I asked about summer fishing. He told me to go shallow. "You might not catch anything, but might meet your furture wife." "That's where I met your Mother!!"
