Location: NE Twin Cities Metro | Hi everyone, first I have to say you all do AMAZING work. Following this board for years has inspired me to try my ideas out by designing and making my own baits. I have what I think is a great idea for a pull bait as well as other types. But I have never followed through with the ideas, only pondered and dreamt about them. When you have an idea and take it from the drawing board to prototype, what is your process. I'm thinking i'll be carving the prototype body out of wood then make a mold and tweek it from there for weighting, hook placement and so on. I intend this bait to be made out of pvc plastic so I can replicate it. Would any of you share your tricks of the trade for an aspiring basement bait maker? Thanks in advance! |

| keep in mind the molding process can get expensive. rtv silicone is your best best and can run around 50 bucks for just less than half a gallon or so. if you have mulitple designs, it can add up. i would recommend getting your master exactly how you want it, play with the line tie, hook placement, and ballast getting it as close as you can before you make the final mold.
after that, you will then have to play with the resin mixture getting the proper sink rate you want. its a pretty vague question, if you were more specific on what your looking for, it might get a better response... |

| i know you want too make plastic baits but if your just starting out woods a good ace to start so you can figure out the shapes your planning on turning into baits . trust me if your like me your gonna have some duds before you have the lure you really want . What do is think of the lure style that benefits how i fish . building baits you really want to see in the water is fun and rewarding . If you find a body style that you like a lot work out that baits action so its now a cool shape and it action is what you consider deadly. Then when you have that together practice painting till you love your brush then you put it all together and coat it with a finish you like . then take bait hook it to a leader and fish the heck out of it . I took a stab at your question as best i could hope you could get something from it |

Location: NE Twin Cities Metro | Thanks for the replies. I'm thinking this pull bait will be like a bulldog but be hard bodied and jointed. I bought some plastic trim board and have started carving out the shape. I think eventual once I get the correct shape i'll want throughwire but I'm thinking the line tie spot will be a critical design item that will greatly affect action. |

Location: Okoboji | grab some cedar and get to carving and sanding...it sands a heck of a lot easier than the hardwoods. you can use some epoxy modelers putty and get some shapes out of that too,,,just make it the way you want it before it hardens... dont pour a mold until your 100% good on your prototype. |
