Posts: 11 | I am about to pick up my "new to me" alumacraft navigator 165. It's a tiller with a 50hp Honda. Due to the hp restricted lakes in PA, I want to mount a kicker motor on it, but am concerned with adding the extra weight. What would be the smallest (lightest) hp that I could get away with while still allowing me to troll 5-7 mph? Thanks, Tony

Posts: 147 Location: Chesterton, Indiana | You maybe able to go with a 8 or 6 HP engine. I have a 9.9 on my 17.5' tracker and it goes about 8.5 mph. I have a 150 on the back so it adds quite a bit more wieght compared to your 50.

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, I have an 8hp 4 stroke on my navigator 165 (the 2005 model which was widened substantially). I have a big eared solas prop on that in 5" pitch so I get good umph, but can troll down to under 1mph with it. Tops out at about 5.5mph which is all I need for my purposes. I'm guessing your navigator is what they now call the 165 "classic" which had a maximum HP rating of 75 in console and 60 in tiller if memory serves me correctly. I would say with that rig, a good 6hp motor would do just fine. I would assume you would look at a 4 stroke, so in many cases, the 6hp might weigh the same as an 8 hp as many are made off the same engine block. I would bet you could get away with a 5 hp as well. If you are looking to troll with the kicker at those speeds, it will be louder than running your big motor as reaching 5 to 7 mph puts the kickers at their upper limits. Even a 9.9 will be louder as it will be running around mid to upper throttle and weight then gets up there too. A good kicker is handy, though... windy conditions, walleyes if you choose, and if the big motor goes down, it gets you off the water. Steve

Posts: 11 | Thanks for the replies. Steve, I should have mentioned that my boat/motor are both 2005 as well. I'm trying to find a Honda kicker to match the main motor. I've found a few but none in the 6 - 8 hp range yet.

muskie52 - 4/13/2012 10:24 AM catchandrealease, It is from Robbins Marine. Were you the previous owner? No. Stopped in at Robbin's last Spring looking for Lunds and saw it while we were there. Ended up getting a newer Navigator till it was all done. I saw "2005 Navigator tiller with 50HP Honda" and thought it might be the same one. I believe we were told the previous owner had an 8HP kicker on it at one time.

Posts: 107 Location: central illinois | I would get a 9.9. When it comes to a kicker how much more does a 9.9 weigh than an 8 or 6. Navigator's are pretty big 16 or 17ft. I see you prefer a Yamaha, I really don't know if they make a 9.9...if your favorite lake has a 10 horse limit get as close to 10 horses as you can. My boat is my lighter than yours and I have a 9.5 2 stroke and I'm lucky to go 7mph w/ the wind at my back(according to my Lowrance Gps speed). Edited by dway 4/15/2012 12:47 AM

Posts: 3480 Location: Elk River, Minnesota | Hiya, Your 9.5 hp is rated at the motor, so at best you'd be pretty close to 6 to 7hp at the prop, which is why you would only see about 7hp...especially if you have a lighter boat. Steve
