Subject: top water

I was just wondering if anyone could help me out. I wanted to know at what temp you guys start throwing top water baits. Walk the dog style. I love these and throw them in the fall and have good luck.
I have a few standard baits but looking for something new. Anyone have any ideas on whats out there?
Thanks

I throw them right away on the northern WI opener. I stop by Oct, usually because I'm mostly trolling by then.

In the springtime, one of the benefits of topwater is you can cover the ultra shallow water without hanging up and killing the action of your lure. I use a Pacemaker, Chopper, or Weagle.

Ducks don't matter to a top water bite......

Open to Ice up.

Muskies are not aware of and do not care when ducks hatch. No calendar on their wristwatch.

Opportunistic, eat what moves.

In spring I am not focused so much on the actual water temp, but whether the water temp has been rising. If the sun has been heating it up even a few degrees I have more confidence in springtime topwater. Walk-the-dog topwaters, in my opinion, are one of the best triggering lures and can get fish to eat or alteast show themselves when nothing else works. I never hit the water without one in the boat no matter what the water temp or time of year.

I have always thrown weagles and jackpots in the past, but now I really like the action of the smaller 6 inch viper. It rides lower in the water than a jackpot for better hooking and still has the "head bobbing" action. It was awesome for us last season in spring and has already put a fish in the boat this year.

I agree with Steve, from opener on.

VIPERS! Do they really have a better hook-up potential than my now "tackle-box residing" lot of Jackpots that I eventually gave up on?

Cost me a lot of missed fish so I just let them and that style of bait go.

Thanks in advance,

Jeremy.

Try replacing your topwater lure hooks with Gamakatsu's and you'll up your hooking and holding percentage greatly. That said you're still going to miss some on these baits but the strikes sure are fun.

add an extra split ring to jackpot hooks - the extra flex reduces the torque the fish can leverage once hooked.
