Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | After reading every thread I could find about D10 reels, I've narrowed my choice down to either a Saltist Levelwind OR Saltist Black Gold. I like the levelwind on the "original" Saltist. But like the anti-backlash features of the Black Gold. Have never used a non-levelwind reel of any kind. Which one and why? Both are in my price range and I have a BPS gift gard burning a whole in my wallet... Thanks, Tom.

| Don't buy the silver one with the levelwind. I is a beast and retrieves cowgirls blazing fast but casts terribly. I have been fishing 6500 and 7000 Garcias for about 10 years almost never backlashing. The Saltist backlashes every third cast. I have tried just lobbing the baits and also weighting the baits. Nothing works. The reel is well built and I am hoping to hear the Black Gold is a better caster. | |||

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | I use the 30 Saltist and can say with confidence that I Never have backlashes with this reel. In 2yrs. of use maybe 5-6 backlashes. It's a little big but works great for big blades and pounders. I will get a 20 Saltist for some smaller lures this season. I can't comment on the black gold reel. Jerome

Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | Thanks for the replies guys. I think I'm going to take a chance on a Black Gold. Can always sell it if I don't like it I guess... Was all set to get a size 20. However, in the BG series, they have a 35 size. Width appears to be about the same as the 20, but the height appears to be about the same as a 40. Gear ratios/inches per handle turn are 6.1:1/35" for the 20 and 6.4:1/48" for the 35. Weights are 16.5 vs 21.1. I like the idea of the faster 35 size, but is it too much of a good thing? Wonder if the higher speed reel is going to take a lot more effort to retrieve than smaller slower reel? Whichever reel I decide on, it will be going on my 9' XH TI rod. Want this to be my dedicated D10 rod. Thanks much. Tom

Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | Will do! Just have to decide on the 20 or the 35... Leaning towards the 20, unless I get a 35. Help! Tom

Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | Think that's the route I'm going to take. Little more of a sure thing with that size. Bigger size is temping, but have a feeling I'd either love it or hate it. Also see BPS has 300yd spools of Power Pro on sale. Going to pick up a spool of 100lb. Tom

| Tom, I run a Black Gold 35 on a TI 9' XH and am very happy with it. I like the 35 because it has the narrow spool so it stacks easier without the levelwind. It would like it smaller in diameter, but I can still palm it all day no problem. Only thing is the gears are kinda loud, but this thing will burn some DC10's!! | |||

Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | Almost went the 35 route. Have a 20 on its way. Looks like the spool width is pretty close between the two. Tom

Posts: 88 Location: Wisconsin | Got the 20 today. Spooled it up with a little backing and some 100lb Power Pro. Reel feels solid and well built. Adjusted the tension so the bait just slipped. Cast great. No different than any other baitcaster for that matter. Threw a Whopper Plopper first. Just in case... Then a 10. Then a Super Model. No problems with backlashes. Non-levelwind wasn't really much of an issue either. Foregot to manually engage the reel the first few times. Easy enough once you get the hang of it. Ease of retrieve wasn't quite as easy as I expected. Then again haven't thrown for quite awhile either. Speed was decent. Easy to pop it out of the water as it got closer. I'd say that if you want to REALLY burn big blades. The bigger real might be the way to go, with its higher line pick-up. But for all around big blades with extra speed when you need it, reel worked great. Tom
