I have never really understood rod line weight. If a rod says 30-60 pound line. does it really matter if you go above or below that number?

no. not at all. i think some of the mystery behind this was there for a guide to the diameter of line (as if you were using mono). Not sure, but 80# braid is like 20lb mono in diameter

yep, 80LB braid is the equivalent to 17LB mono line
